TN Govt may initiate disciplinary proceedings against IAS officer

C Umashankar, IAS and a crusader against corruption and an early advocate of the use of free software in e-governance has been warned by TN Chief secretary K Gnanadesikan against taking part in preaching and propogating activities in Tirenelveli, Thoothukudi and Kanniyakumari districts from January 24 to January 26 which is likely to cause communal disharmony. In a letter written to commissioner to initiate disciplinary proceedings against Umashankar. The letter directed him not to indulge in such activities which are unbecoming of a member of the service, failing which necessary action would be taken.

Umashankar reasoned that he is guided by God and has cancelled prayer meetings but challenged the dikat, plans to move the high court against the order. It’s is a known fact that he was born Hindu dalit who later converted to Christianity.

Move from either side has the potential of creating deep divide of the so called debate over freedom of religion in Tamil Nadu in coming days.
