Shri Rohit Kumar IAS (Rajasthan 1997) presently Additional Secretary- Cabinet Secretariat has been appointed as Additional Secretary- NITI Aayog with extension of central deputation tenure of the officer for a period of one year beyond 24.09.2025 i.e. up to 24.09.2026 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Shri Rohit Kumar, a seasoned officer of the 1997 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Rajasthan cadre, has been appointed as Additional Secretary in NITI Aayog. With over 27 years of distinguished service, Shri Kumar brings a wealth of administrative experience and institutional insight to one of India’s premier policy think tanks.
An alumnus of St. Stephen’s College, University of Delhi, he holds both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Mathematics. Known for his analytical acumen and balanced approach, Shri Kumar has steadily built a career marked by key roles in public policy, rural development, transportation, and revenue administration.
He most recently served as Additional Secretary in the Cabinet Secretariat, a position he held from November 2022 until his current appointment. Prior to that, he was Joint Secretary in the same department and previously spent four years in the Ministry of Rural Development, where he played a vital role in driving flagship welfare programs aimed at rural upliftment.
Shri Kumar has also held the post of Director in the Ministry of Road Transport & Highways and earlier served as District Collector in multiple districts of Rajasthan including Nagaur, Jalore, Jhalawar, and Rajsamand—positions that demanded grassroots engagement and crisis management skills. His tenure in revenue, taxation, school education, and commercial taxes demonstrates his wide-ranging administrative capacity.
In his early career, Shri Kumar served as Sub-Divisional Officer and Assistant Collector, where he honed his governance skills across land revenue, district administration, and public service delivery. His longstanding experience in both field postings and policy formulation at the Centre and in his cadre state reflects a deep understanding of the Indian administrative framework.
Quietly effective and committed to public service, Shri Rohit Kumar’s appointment to NITI Aayog is expected to strengthen the institution’s role in evidence-based policy design, inter-ministerial coordination, and strategic planning.
