West Bengal Govt Shakes Up Bureaucracy, Transfers 67 IAS and 465 WBCS Officers

Indian Bureaucracy News Network, Kolkata, October 27, 2025 | In a day jam-packed with major bureaucratic changes, the Mamata Banerjee government on Monday issued a series of transfer orders (dt 24.10.2025) reshaping the state’s administrative machinery. Through ten separate notifications, the government transferred 61 IAS officers and over 465 WBCS officers — including 14 District Magistrates, several Special Secretaries, OSDs, BDOs, SDOs, and ADMs — in what is being seen as one of the largest single-day reshuffles in recent years.

While the government described the changes as part of a routine administrative exercise, the timing — coming just hours before the Election Commission announced the schedule for the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls — has drawn political attention. Officials said the reshuffle was aimed at ensuring smooth administrative functioning ahead of the revision process.

Key appointments include new District Magistrates in North and South 24 Parganas, Malda, Murshidabad, Purulia, Birbhum, and Darjeeling, among others. The large-scale changes have also seen new postings across secretariat departments and development bodies.

Opposition parties questioned the intent behind the sudden shake-up, but state officials maintained that the transfers are part of the ongoing rotation of officers to maintain administrative efficiency.
