Shri Amrit Agrahari IRS (IT 2011) presently Director – Department of Economic Affairs has been appointed as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office for the balance period of his central deputation tenure by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Shri Amrit Agrahari, a distinguished officer of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), has been appointed as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). Known for his professionalism, analytical depth, and commitment to public service, Shri Agrahari brings over a decade of diverse experience in taxation, fiscal policy, and economic administration.
An alumnus of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur, he holds a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering (2005–2009). He further enhanced his academic credentials with a Master’s degree in Taxation and Business Laws from the National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR) University, Hyderabad (2012–2014), and a Master of Arts in Economics from Indira Gandhi National Open University (2015–2017). His strong academic foundation blends technical precision with a sound understanding of law and economics—an asset in his administrative and policy-oriented roles.
Shri Agrahari joined the Indian Revenue Service (Income Tax) and began his career as Assistant Commissioner of Income Tax, focusing on tax assessment, revenue collection, and curbing tax evasion. His meticulous approach and fair administrative practices marked him as a dedicated officer early in his career. As Deputy Commissioner of Income Tax, he continued to demonstrate leadership in tax administration, combining efficiency with transparency in service delivery.
He subsequently served in the Foreign Tax and Tax Research (FT&TR) Division of the Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT), Ministry of Finance, as Under Secretary (2016–2020). During this tenure, he handled key international taxation issues including Mutual Agreement Procedures (MAPs), Advance Pricing Agreements (APAs), and Exchange of Information for Tax Purposes. His contributions in policy formulation and international cooperation strengthened India’s global tax transparency initiatives.
In 2020, Shri Agrahari was posted to the Financial Intelligence Unit – India (FIU-IND), where he served successively as Deputy Director and later Joint Director. His work in financial intelligence, anti–money laundering, and data analysis enhanced the effectiveness of India’s financial monitoring framework. He played an instrumental role in improving inter-agency coordination and analytical capabilities within FIU, contributing to the nation’s efforts in combating financial crimes.
Since December 2022, Shri Agrahari has been serving as Deputy Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs (DEA), Ministry of Finance, where he has dealt with matters relating to economic policy, financial markets, and fiscal management. His balanced understanding of macroeconomic policy and revenue administration has been widely appreciated.
His appointment as Director in the Prime Minister’s Office reflects the government’s recognition of his expertise, diligence, and commitment to governance.
