Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan appointed as Chief of the Naval Staff
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan has been appointed as the next Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS). He will succeed Admiral Dinesh Kumar Tripathi, who is scheduled to retire from service on May 31, 2026. The appointment marks another significant leadership transition in the Indian Navy at a time when maritime security and strategic preparedness remain central to India’s national defence priorities.
Vice Admiral Krishna Swaminathan is presently serving as the 34th Flag Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Western Naval Command, one of the most operationally significant commands of the Indian Navy. He assumed charge of the command on July 31, 2025. An officer with vast operational, strategic, and administrative experience, he brings with him nearly four decades of distinguished naval service.
Commissioned into the Indian Navy on July 1, 1987, Vice Admiral Swaminathan is a specialist in Communication and Electronic Warfare. Throughout his illustrious career, he has held several important operational, staff, and instructional appointments across various commands of the Navy. His experience across frontline warships, personnel management, operational readiness, and strategic planning makes him one of the most accomplished officers of the service.
An alumnus of the prestigious National Defence Academy, the Admiral has also attended the Joint Services Command and Staff College at Shrivenham in the United Kingdom, the College of Naval Warfare at Karanja, and the United States Naval War College. His academic and professional training reflects a strong foundation in maritime strategy, defence studies, and international security affairs.

His command assignments include missile vessels INS Vidyut and INS Vinash, missile corvette INS Kulish, guided missile destroyer INS Mysore, and the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya. These assignments provided him with extensive operational exposure in fleet operations, maritime combat readiness, and carrier battle group management.
On promotion to the rank of Rear Admiral, he served as Chief Staff Officer (Training) at Headquarters Southern Naval Command in Kochi. During this tenure, he played a crucial role in strengthening professional training standards across the Indian Navy. He was also instrumental in establishing the Indian Naval Safety Team, an important initiative aimed at enhancing operational safety and standardisation across naval platforms and establishments.
The Admiral later headed the Navy’s Work Up Organisation as Flag Officer Sea Training, where he was responsible for operational preparedness and combat efficiency of naval units. Subsequently, he served as the Flag Officer Commanding Western Fleet, often referred to as the “Sword Arm” of the Indian Navy due to its strategic and operational significance. His leadership in this role further strengthened his credentials as a frontline operational commander.
Following his tenure with the Western Fleet, Vice Admiral Swaminathan was appointed as the Flag Officer Offshore Defence Advisory Group and Advisor, Offshore Security and Defence to the Government of India. In this capacity, he contributed significantly towards strengthening offshore security mechanisms and maritime defence coordination.
