Agricultural Research & Education and Secretary- ICAR has been appointed as OSD- Bureau of Indian Standards, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution (rank and pay of Secretary ). Shri Sanjay Garg will take over as Director General, Bureau of Indian Standards, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution on 31.10.2025 .
Who is IAS Sanjay Garg | Shri Sanjay Garg IAS, a seasoned officer with wide-ranging administrative experience, has been appointed as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the Bureau of Indian Standards, Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food and Public Distribution. He was serving as Additional Secretary in the Department of Agricultural Research & Education and Secretary of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR), where he played an important role in strengthening agricultural research and education policies for the country.
An officer with an M.Tech in Production Management, Shri Garg combines technical knowledge with administrative acumen. Over the years, he has held some of the most crucial assignments in both the Central and State Governments. His tenure at ICAR since 2021 saw him steering initiatives that linked scientific research to the needs of farmers and the agricultural economy, reflecting his ability to align long-term vision with practical execution.
Earlier, he served as Resident Commissioner at Kerala House in New Delhi, where he successfully coordinated between the state and the Centre. As Principal Secretary in the Department of Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe Development in Kerala, he contributed to welfare measures and social empowerment programmes. He also briefly held charge as Principal Secretary in the Industries Department, guiding state-level industrial and investment policies.
At the Central Government level, Shri Garg’s contributions have been noteworthy. As Executive Director in the Food Corporation of India (2017–2019), he oversaw procurement, storage, and distribution of food grains, strengthening India’s food security operations. Prior to this, he served as Joint Secretary in the Department of Defence Production (2013–2017), where he was associated with initiatives to promote indigenous defence manufacturing and streamline supply chains. His stint as Director in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, gave him experience in shaping policies of fiscal and economic importance. He also served in the Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion, where he worked on matters related to trade and industrial growth.
His field-level experience adds depth to his profile. During his inter-cadre deputation to Chhattisgarh, Shri Garg served as District Collector in Raipur, Rajnandgaon, and Korba, where he earned respect for effective governance and people-centric administration. He also contributed in the areas of rural development, education, manpower planning, and Panchayati Raj, gaining valuable insights into grassroots challenges.
In his parent Kerala cadre, he held important posts such as Managing Director of the Kerala State Co-operative Marketing Federation, where he worked on agricultural marketing, and Secretary in the Local Self Government Department, where he focused on strengthening Panchayati Raj institutions. His early years as Assistant Collector further shaped his approach to administration and service delivery.
Shri Sanjay Garg IAS is regarded as a versatile and dedicated officer, known for his ability to balance policy-making with on-ground realities. His new assignment at the Bureau of Indian Standards comes at a significant time, as standardization and quality assurance are central to India’s growth story.
