Shri Sandeep Arya IFS (1994) presently Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan.
Shri Sandeep Arya IFS (1994), a seasoned diplomat with nearly three decades of distinguished service, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Bhutan. Presently serving as the Ambassador of India to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, he assumed charge of this important assignment in October 2022. Known for his commitment to strengthening India’s diplomatic engagements, Shri Arya has consistently worked to advance India’s strategic, cultural, and economic ties across different regions of the world.
Prior to his current role, Shri Arya held several senior positions in the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), New Delhi, where he served as Additional Secretary (Disarmament & International Security Affairs) and Joint Secretary (Europe West/AD) between 2019 and 2022. His contributions in these critical domains reflected his deep understanding of global security, arms control, and India’s relations with key international partners. His balanced approach and keen diplomatic insight earned him recognition within the foreign service.
As Ambassador, Shri Arya earlier served as the High Commissioner of India to Tanzania and Representative to the East African Community from 2015 to 2019. During this tenure, he worked towards enhancing bilateral cooperation in trade, development partnerships, education, and people-to-people exchanges. His efforts played a key role in deepening India’s engagement with East Africa, a region of growing strategic significance.
From 1994 to 2015, Shri Arya held various important assignments in India and abroad. He served at the Indian Embassies in the Netherlands, Russia, and Ukraine, gaining valuable experience in multilateral diplomacy, bilateral relations, and regional security. In addition, he contributed significantly through his work in different divisions of the MEA, New Delhi, where he handled responsibilities central to India’s foreign policy priorities. Each of these roles added to his versatility and depth as a career diplomat.
Born in June 1971 in Kashipur, India, Shri Arya is academically accomplished with multiple degrees that reflect both technical expertise and broad intellectual curiosity. He holds a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Technology in Nuclear Engineering, a Master of Arts in Economics, and a Master of Business Administration. This strong academic foundation has enriched his understanding of the complex interplay between technology, economics, and international relations.
Fluent in Hindi, English, and Russian, Shri Arya is well-regarded for his ability to engage across cultures and build lasting diplomatic relationships. Beyond his professional commitments, he nurtures a deep interest in history, international relations, and global developments, which complements his career as a diplomat. He also enjoys listening to music and practicing yoga, pursuits that reflect a balanced and thoughtful personality.
Shri Sandeep Arya is married to Dr. Suveta Singh, and together they are blessed with two sons. Known for his humility, clarity of vision, and professional dedication, he is widely respected within the diplomatic community.
