Shri Piyush Anand IPS (Uttar Pradesh 1991) presently Director General- National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) has been given extension for a period of one year beyond
30.03.2026  by continuing the upgradation of the post presently held by the officer to the level of DG for a penod upto 30.03.2027 (3rd year) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Shri Piyush Anand, a distinguished officer of the Indian Police Service (IPS) from the 1991 batch of the Uttar Pradesh cadre, has built an extensive and accomplished career spanning more than three decades in policing, internal security, and disaster management. Known for his administrative competence, operational leadership and commitment to public service, he has held several key positions both in the state of Uttar Pradesh and in major central security organizations. His diverse experience across policing, investigative agencies and paramilitary forces reflects a strong blend of field-level expertise and strategic leadership.

An academically accomplished officer, Shri Anand completed his B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, one of India’s premier engineering institutions. He further strengthened his administrative and policy capabilities by earning a Post Graduate Diploma in Public Policy and Management from the Management Development Institute (MDI), Gurgaon. This combination of technical education and policy training has contributed to his analytical approach to governance and decision-making.

During his long tenure in the Uttar Pradesh Police, Shri Anand served in several important field assignments. He held the position of Superintendent of Police (SP) and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) in 11 districts of Uttar Pradesh, gaining extensive experience in maintaining law and order, managing complex policing challenges and leading large police forces at the district level. These field postings played a crucial role in shaping his operational understanding of policing and public administration.

He later moved to senior leadership positions within the state police, serving as Inspector General (IG) of Moradabad Range and IG of Kanpur Range, where he oversaw policing operations across multiple districts. His responsibilities included supervision of law and order management, crime control strategies and coordination among district police units. His leadership during these assignments was marked by a focus on professionalism, administrative efficiency and community-oriented policing.

Shri Anand also served in key headquarters roles in the Uttar Pradesh Police as Additional Director General (ADG) Establishment and ADG Railways. In these positions, he was responsible for crucial administrative functions including personnel management, policy implementation and strengthening security arrangements within the railway network. These roles required a high level of organizational leadership and strategic planning within one of the country’s largest police organizations.

Beyond the state cadre, Shri Anand has also made significant contributions at the national level. He served in the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) for more than seven years, gaining valuable experience in investigation of complex and sensitive cases. His tenure in the CBI involved handling high-profile investigations and strengthening institutional investigative processes.

He also served in the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) for over three years, where he contributed to operations related to internal security and counter-insurgency. His experience in the CRPF provided him with deeper exposure to paramilitary operations and the management of security challenges in diverse and demanding environments.

Prior to his present assignment, Shri Anand served in the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) as Additional Director General (ADG) and later Special Director General (SDG) for more than a year. In the CISF, he was associated with overseeing security management for critical infrastructure installations, airports and other strategic facilities across the country.

On March 31, 2024, Shri Piyush Anand assumed charge as the Director General of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF). As the head of India’s premier disaster response organization, he is responsible for leading specialized teams that respond to natural and man-made disasters across the country. His extensive administrative and operational experience places him in a strong position to guide the force in strengthening disaster preparedness, response capabilities and inter-agency coordination.

Throughout his career, Shri Anand has been recognized with several prestigious awards and commendations. He has been conferred the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service and the Police Medal for Meritorious Service, two of the highest honours in Indian policing. He also received the Gold Medal from the School of Public Policy & Management, MDI Gurgaon for outstanding academic performance.

His contributions have further been acknowledged through multiple commendations including the Director General of Police, Uttar Pradesh Commendation Disc – Silver in 2018, Gold in 2019 and Platinum in 2020, as well as the Kumbh Sewa Medal in 2019 for his role in the successful management of the Kumbh Mela. In addition, he received the DG’s CRPF Commendation Disc in 2017 in recognition of his service in the paramilitary force.

With a distinguished career spanning policing, investigation, internal security and disaster management, Shri Piyush Anand continues to exemplify professional excellence and dedicated public service.
