Shri Pawan Kumar Sharma IAS (Madhya Pradesh 1999) presently Additional Secretary- Department of Defence, Ministry of Defence has been appointed as Deputy Election Commissioner- Election Commission of India (rank and pay of Additional Secretary) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Shri Pawan Kumar Sharma, IAS, is a distinguished officer of the Indian Administrative Service whose career exemplifies dedication, intellectual depth, and administrative excellence. With a proven record of leadership across diverse domains of governance, he has now been appointed as Deputy Election Commissioner in the Election Commission of India (ECI), one of the most critical institutions safeguarding India’s democracy. His appointment is a recognition of his long-standing service and visionary leadership in both state and central government roles.
Shri Sharma’s academic journey is as remarkable as his administrative career. He graduated in Mechanical Engineering with distinction from the Delhi Technological University (DTU), followed by a Master’s degree in Production Engineering, again with distinction. His intellectual curiosity led him to pursue a Ph.D. in Quality Management from Delhi University, reflecting his deep commitment to academic rigor and problem-solving. Expanding his horizons beyond engineering, he also acquired a Law degree (LL.B.) from Jiwaji University, a Post Graduate Program in Cyber Law from the Indian Law Institute, Delhi, and an M.A. in Economics from IGNOU. Professionally, Shri Sharma has held a wide array of important positions in Madhya Pradesh, Delhi, and the Union Government. Beginning his career as Assistant Collector in Mandla and Sub-Divisional Officer in Shajapur, he quickly established a reputation for people-centric governance and strong field administration. As District Collector in Damoh and Chhindwara, he successfully led developmental programs, revenue management, and welfare initiatives, strengthening the administrative fabric at the grassroots.
In urban governance, he brought about significant improvements as Commissioner of Gwalior Municipal Corporation, Administrator of Indore Municipal Corporation, and later as Commissioner in Indore Division. His tenure was marked by reforms in municipal administration, urban infrastructure development, and revenue efficiency, earning him recognition as a result-oriented administrator.
At the state level, his leadership as Revenue Divisional Commissioner in Indore and Bhopal and as Commissioner in the Narmada Valley Development Department demonstrated his ability to handle large-scale projects, disaster management, and water resource administration. His role in Commercial Taxes further displayed his acumen in financial management and policy enforcement.
At the Centre, Shri Sharma has made equally significant contributions.
