Shri M Angamuthu IAS (Assam Meghalaya 2002) has been appointed as Chairperson – Mumbai Port Authority, Mumbai (JS level) under the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways for a combined tenure of seven years upto 13.10.2027 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet vice Shri Rajiv Jalota IAS (MH 1988).
Shri M. Angamuthu, IAS, is a highly accomplished civil servant with an illustrious career spanning over two decades, marked by visionary leadership, administrative excellence, and an unwavering commitment to public service. A senior officer of the Indian Administrative Service, he has now been appointed as Chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority, one of the oldest and most significant maritime gateways of India. Academically, Shri Angamuthu stands out for his exceptional scholarly foundation. He holds a Postgraduate and Graduate degree in Agriculture with first-class distinctions, and further pursued advanced research in agricultural sciences. His academic journey culminated with a Ph.D. in Agriculture from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, followed by another doctoral specialization in Horticulture. This blend of scientific depth and practical acumen has consistently informed his approach to governance, especially in areas related to resource management, rural development, and sustainable growth.
Professionally, Shri Angamuthu has held a wide spectrum of important positions across Assam and the Union Government. He began his IAS career as Assistant Commissioner in Jorhat and subsequently served as Sub-Divisional Officer in Kamrup, laying a strong foundation in grassroots administration. Rising through the ranks, he went on to become Deputy Commissioner in multiple districts including Karbi Anglong, Bongaigaon, Karimganj, Nagaon, and Guwahati, where he dealt with complex governance challenges such as land revenue management, law and order, and development administration. His district-level leadership was widely recognized for its focus on people-centric policies, efficient disaster management, and participatory development.
His contributions in urban development and infrastructure planning have been particularly impactful. As CEO of Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority, Managing Director of Guwahati Municipal Corporation, and Commissioner-cum-Secretary of Urban Development, Assam, Shri Angamuthu played a pivotal role in modernizing urban governance, strengthening civic infrastructure, and promoting sustainable urban growth. His tenure in these roles left behind a legacy of innovation and efficiency in municipal administration.
In the sphere of commerce and industry, his appointment as Chairman of the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) at the Centre showcased his deep expertise in agriculture and international trade. During his leadership, APEDA witnessed renewed momentum in boosting India’s agri-exports, developing new markets, and supporting farmers through value addition and global integration. His strategic vision significantly enhanced India’s agricultural footprint in international markets.
Furthering his journey in the maritime sector, Shri Angamuthu took over as Chairperson of the Visakhapatnam Port Authority (2023–2025). Under his stewardship, the port strengthened its operational efficiency, adopted modern logistics solutions, and improved global connectivity. His efforts in capacity expansion, digital transformation, and sustainability initiatives elevated Visakhapatnam Port as a model of modern port management.
Now, as Chairperson of the Mumbai Port Authority (2025–2027), Shri Angamuthu brings with him an unmatched blend of grassroots experience, sectoral expertise, and international exposure.
