Ministry of Defence announces Army acquires state-of-the-art Vertical Wind Tunnel for Special Forces training – Indian Bureaucracy

In a significant advancement aimed at bolstering the training infrastructure for special forces and combat free-fallers, the Special Forces Training School (SFTS) in Bakloh, Himachal Pradesh, has acquired the Indian Army’s inaugural Vertical Wind Tunnel (VWT). General Manoj Pande, Chief of the Army Staff, virtually inaugurated this state-of-the-art facility, which is poised to refine the Combat Freefall (CFF) skills of armed forces personnel.

As part of the ongoing transformation within the Indian Army, the infusion of technology into training methodologies is a strategic imperative. The introduction of the VWT represents a critical step in this direction. Functioning as a freefall simulator, the VWT generates a controlled column of air at specific velocities, allowing for the precise replication of various CFF conditions. This controlled environment empowers trainees to augment their skills by simulating real-world freefall scenarios.

The integration of the VWT into the CFF training curriculum at SFTS yields several key advantages. The system replicates diverse freefall scenarios, a critical component in evaluating individual responses to numerous situations encountered in airborne operations. It mitigates potential instability during freefall and parachute deployment, facilitating trainees’ acclimatization to freefall conditions. Notably, the VWT benefits both novice trainees and provides an exceptional resource for delivering advanced training to experienced free-fallers and CFF instructors.

The installation of the first VWT aligns with the current emphasis on modernizing the training infrastructure in the Indian Army. This groundbreaking project, a first of its kind within the Indian Army, will deliver comprehensive simulated training in combat freefall to special forces. It is poised to significantly elevate the operational readiness of the forward-looking Indian Army, ensuring that special forces are fully prepared to address contemporary challenges on present and future battlefronts. This cutting-edge facility promises faster and more precise training results.
