Shri Justice K R Shriram presently Chief Justice of Madras High Court has been transferred as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.
Justice K.R. Shriram, is a distinguished jurist known for his expertise in commercial and maritime law. Born on September 28, 1963, in Mumbai, he completed his B.Com. in Financial Accountancy and Management and LL.B. from Mumbai University. Driven by a passion for specialized legal knowledge, he pursued an LL.M. in Maritime Law from the prestigious King’s College, London, where he graduated with merit—laying the foundation for a remarkable legal career.
He was enrolled as an Advocate with the Bar Council of Maharashtra and Goa on July 3, 1986. He began his professional journey in the chambers of Senior Advocate Mr. S. Venkiteswaran, where he gained valuable experience in commercial and constitutional matters. In 1997, he established his own independent practice, focusing on shipping, international trade law, and a wide array of commercial litigation. His legal practice encompassed Writ matters related to Ports Acts, Customs Act, Motor Vehicles Act, and Company Law, along with specialized work in marine insurance and reinsurance.
Justice Shriram’s career was marked by versatility, encompassing both litigation and advisory roles. He appeared before the Bombay High Court, the Supreme Court of India, and various tribunals including CESTAT, Securities Appellate Tribunal, and Consumer Disputes Redressal Forums. He handled complex arbitrations, civil suits, and statutory inquiries under the Merchant Shipping Act, earning wide respect for his command over maritime and commercial jurisprudence. His commitment to institutional development was reflected in his role as a member of the Core Committee-I on Admiralty matters, where he contributed to the reform of Bombay High Court’s procedural rules.
Beyond the courtroom, Justice Shriram has shown deep personal commitment to social causes. For years, he served as Vice-Chairman of Dharmishta Mithran, an NGO that facilitates rituals and support services for bereaved families. A keen golfer and a well-traveled individual, he brings a balance of compassion and discipline to his public role.
He was elevated as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on June 21, 2013, and became a Permanent Judge on March 2, 2016. On September 21, 2024, he was elevated as Chief Justice of the Madras High Court and assumed office on September 27, 2024. Justice Shriram is widely admired for his intellectual depth, fairness, and steady leadership on the Bench.
