Shri Justice M S Ramachandra Rao presently Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court has been transferred as Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court.

Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, is a jurist of exceptional academic and judicial distinction, hailing from a legacy of eminent judges. Born on August 7, 1966, in Hyderabad, he displayed brilliance early on, earning a B.Sc. (Hons.) in Mathematics from Bhavan’s New Science College, Osmania University, where he topped the university. He went on to complete his LL.B. from the University College of Law, Osmania University in 1989, and was awarded the prestigious CVSS Acharyulu Gold Medal for securing the highest marks in the final year.

His academic pursuits led him to the University of Cambridge, U.K., where he earned an LL.M. in 1991—an achievement that reflects his global perspective and deep commitment to legal scholarship. Justice Ramachandra Rao belongs to a distinguished legal lineage. His father, Justice M. Jagannadha Rao, served as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India and as Chairman of the Law Commission of India. His grandfather, M.S. Ramachandra Rao, also served as a Judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court in the early 1960s.

Enrolled as an advocate on September 7, 1989, Justice Ramachandra Rao built a robust legal practice before being elevated as an Additional Judge of the High Court of Andhra Pradesh on June 29, 2012. He was confirmed as a permanent Judge on December 4, 2013. Known for his clarity of thought and scholarly approach, he was entrusted with the duties of Acting Chief Justice of the High Court for the State of Telangana from August 31, 2021.

His judicial journey took him to the Punjab and Haryana High Court, where he assumed office on October 12, 2021, and served until May 29, 2023. He was then elevated as the Chief Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court and took oath on May 30, 2023. In recognition of his extensive experience and judicial leadership, he was appointed Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on September 21, 2024, and assumed office on September 25, 2024.
