Shri Ajay Kumar IAS (Gujarat 2006) presently Joint Secretary-Department of Defence has been given premature repatriation to his parent cadre w.e.f. 31.12.2025 (AN) by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Shri Ajay Kumar has built a reputation for administrative excellence grounded in academic brilliance, dedicated field experience, and an unwavering commitment to public service. An accomplished scholar, Shri Ajay Kumar completed his B.Sc. (Hons.) in Agriculture, securing First Class, which laid a strong academic foundation for his career. He further advanced his specialization by earning an M.Sc. in Agronomy from the Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI), New Delhi, again with First Class distinction. His pursuit of academic excellence continued as he completed a Ph.D. in Agronomy from IARI, reflecting deep analytical and research capabilities. This early exposure to scientific study and evidence-based thinking has remained a defining strength throughout his administrative journey.
Shri Ajay Kumar joined the prestigious All India Services and went on to demonstrate his abilities across various important postings. His earliest tenure involved hands-on district administration, which shaped his understanding of public service delivery. From Assistant Collector, Banaskantha (2007–2010) to District Development Officer, Jamnagar (2010–2013), he gained substantial experience in land revenue management, development planning, and subdivision-level administration.
He later served as District Collector, Amreli (2013–2015) and District Collector, Gir Somnath (2015–2017)—roles that allowed him to work closely with communities, oversee major welfare initiatives, and strengthen administrative coordination across sectors. In these responsibilities, Shri Ajay Kumar displayed a composed leadership style, particularly in public-facing governance, disaster preparedness, and district-level development agendas.
His transition to state-level financial administration came with his posting as Special Commissioner in the Finance & Commercial Taxes Department (2017–2019), where he contributed to revenue reforms and commercial tax governance. The position marked a significant evolution from field duties to policy-linked responsibilities, demonstrating the adaptability and wide administrative range that colleagues often acknowledge in his working style.
Shri Ajay Kumar later moved to central deputation, serving as PS to Minister across multiple key ministries. His tenure includes postings in the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, Ministry of Steel, and Ministry of Education, in capacities equivalent to Deputy Secretary and Director. His work in Minister’s Offices allowed him to engage with decision-making at the highest administrative levels, coordinating between ministries, stakeholders, and policy implementation frameworks.
Since October 2022, Shri Ajay Kumar has been serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defence, a role that represents significant responsibility in one of India’s most strategic ministries. Based in New Delhi, he continues to contribute to defence administration with a balanced approach—upholding organisational priorities while fostering inter-departmental efficiency. His experience across multiple ministries and sectors has provided him a multidimensional understanding of governance, making his perspective particularly valuable in such a sensitive and dynamic domain.
