Shri Siddharth Mahajan IAS (Rajasthan 2003) presently Joint Secretary- Department of Commerce has been given premature repatriation to his parent cadre by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Shri Siddharth Mahajan has established himself as a capable and thoughtful public administrator whose career reflects experience across multiple sectors of governance, including commerce, parliamentary affairs, district administration, labour, finance, urban development, and general administration. His journey showcases a blend of field-level leadership and policy-level engagement, contributing meaningfully to institutional efficiency and public service delivery.
Academically, Shri Mahajan built a strong foundation in economics and law—an interdisciplinary combination well suited to the complexities of modern governance. He completed his B.A. (Honours) in Economics from Delhi, followed by an LL.B. and subsequently an LL.M. in Law. This academic progression has equipped him with both analytical depth and a nuanced understanding of legal and administrative frameworks—strengths that have remained consistent throughout his professional responsibilities.
Entering the All India Services, Shri Mahajan began his administrative journey in personnel management, serving as OSD to Minister in the Personnel Department (2006–2007). This early exposure to ministerial coordination helped him develop insights into policy processes and high-level government functioning. He soon transitioned to field administration, taking up district leadership positions that would shape his administrative identity for years to come.
Between 2007 and 2018, he served as District Collector and District Magistrate across several districts including Sirohi, Baran, Jodhpur, and Jaipur. These postings involved core responsibilities in land revenue management, law and order, disaster response, and development implementation. His movement through multiple districts in quick succession reflects the confidence placed in his ability to manage wide-ranging administrative challenges. Whether the need was governance continuity, developmental prioritization, or crisis coordination, his assignments consistently placed him at the centre of district-level decision-making.
Parallel to district administration, Shri Mahajan also handled positions that dealt with financial oversight and urban development. His roles as Commissioner in the Development Authority, Jodhpur (2011–2012) and Commissioner in the Finance / Investment division (2012–2013) broadened his administrative exposure to infrastructure planning and investment facilitation. He later served as Commissioner, Labour & Employment (2013–2014), giving him experience in labour reforms and employment initiatives—an increasingly critical area in contemporary governance.
Returning to personnel administration, he worked as Special Secretary (2014–2016) and later Secretary (2018–2021) in Personnel and General Administration, where he contributed to administrative reforms and organisational governance. This phase of his career displayed a progressive shift toward executive policy formulation and human resource management at the state level.
In 2021, Shri Siddharth Mahajan moved to the Lok Sabha Secretariat, serving as Joint Secretary Equivalent in the Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs until March 2024. The posting placed him at a crucial intersection of the legislative and executive branches of government. His role in parliamentary coordination required precision, confidentiality, and strong institutional understanding—qualities that his career experience supported effectively.
On 27 March 2024, he assumed charge as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Commerce & Industry, headquartered in New Delhi. The assignment demonstrates the breadth of administrative confidence placed in him, as commerce and trade represent key pillars in India’s economic trajectory. His current role demands strategic engagement with trade policies, industry development, inter-ministerial collaboration, and stakeholder support—areas where his multidisciplinary experience offers valuable perspective.
