Academically, Shri Pithode has been an achiever from the very beginning. He pursued his Bachelor of Engineering in Electronics and Communication from Rajiv Gandhi Prodyogiki Vishwavidyalaya, Bhopal, under Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology (MANIT), where he graduated with distinction. His sound technical background has provided him with a unique perspective in governance, especially in areas involving technology, systems management, and innovation. Before joining the Indian Administrative Service, he briefly worked with General Electric as a software engineer and also served as an officer in the Indian Railway Service of Signal Engineers (IRSSE). These early professional experiences gave him exposure to both private sector efficiency and the discipline of public infrastructure management, preparing him well for the challenges of administration.
Upon joining the IAS in 2009, Shri Pithode took on diverse roles across Madhya Pradesh and the Centre, building a reputation for being a dynamic officer who blends sensitivity with firmness. Beginning his career with training and subsequent postings as Assistant Collector in Ujjain and Sub-Divisional Magistrate in Gwalior, he honed his skills in land revenue management and district administration. His tenure as Chief Executive Officer of Zila Panchayat Khandwa, both in junior and senior scales, demonstrated his ability to work closely with grassroots institutions, ensuring effective delivery of Panchayati Raj and local self-governance schemes.
Rising through the ranks, Shri Pithode held several important administrative positions, including Additional Managing Director of the Energy Development Corporation, Project Director at the State Electronics Development Corporation, and Director of the Madhya Pradesh Professional Examination Board. His handling of these assignments reflected his keen interest in technology-led governance and systemic reforms. As District Collector in Rajgarh, Sehore, Betul, and later Bhopal, he gained widespread recognition for his people-centric administration, decisive leadership during crises, and innovative solutions to district-level challenges.
His roles further expanded into key managerial and policy-making positions. As Director in the Food and Civil Supplies Department and later as Managing Director of the Madhya Pradesh Warehousing Corporation and the State Civil Supplies Corporation, Shri Pithode contributed to strengthening food security systems, warehousing logistics, and consumer protection mechanisms. His administrative insight helped streamline supply chains and improve transparency, benefitting citizens directly. He also served as Commissioner of Medical Education in Madhya Pradesh, where he was closely involved in institutional strengthening and health sector governance.
Currently, Shri Pithode serves as Director (Climate Change) in the Ministry of Environment, Forest, and Climate Change, Government of India. In this capacity, he has been entrusted with steering critical national priorities in the domain of environmental sustainability, climate action, and international cooperation. His leadership in this sector underscores his adaptability and ability to engage with complex global issues that demand a balance between development and ecological preservation.
Beyond his administrative achievements, Shri Pithode is also a prolific author, having penned six books that reflect his intellectual depth and diverse interests. His works include I M Possible, Happiness: A New Model of Human Behaviour, Tootte Rishte Darakte Ghar, The Battle Against Covid, Operation Ganga, and Master Your Destiny: Lessons from Lohani. These writings demonstrate his reflective personality and his commitment to sharing knowledge, inspiration, and experiences with a wider audience.
