Shri Subrata Gupta IAS (West Bengal 1990), has been appointed as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Textiles vice Anu Garg IAS (Odisha 1991).

He has had a long career in administration having held several positions of responsibility both at the field and policy making levels in the Government of West Bengal and Government of India. He is currently posted as the Jute Commissioner under the Government of India. He was the Managing Director of Kolkata Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. implementing the East-West Metro Project in Kolkata. Prior to that Dr. Gupta was the Managing Director of the West Bengal Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. and also the Secretary in the Department of Public Enterprises and the Department of Industrial Reconstruction. He served as District Magistrate in the districts of Jalpaiguri and Burdwan in West Bengal. He had a very successful tenure in the Finance Department of the Government of West Bengal where he made important contributions in the area of e-governance. He began his administrative career as the Sub-Divisional Officer of Serampore followed by a stint as Undersecretary, Home (Political) in the state government and then worked as the Additional District Magistrate in the district of North 24- Paraganas.

After changing schools a few times in several towns, Subrata joined Frank Anthony Public School in the year 1975 in class V. He wrote the ICSE in 1981 and continued in FAPS in the Science stream in Class XI and XII. He wrote ISC in 1983. He wrote the WB-JEE and qualified for the Engineering and in Medicine streams. He also wrote the JEE and got selected for Bachelor of Technology in Department of Electronics and Electrical Communications Engineering in Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur. Subrata completed his B Tech in the year 1987 followed by a Master in Technology from the same institute with specialization in Microwave and Radar Engineering in 1988. He research was in projects associated with India’s missile programme. He went on to complete his PhD in Electronics Engineering from IIT, Kharagpur in the year 1996. In the year 2007, Mr. Gupta received his MBA degree from the School of Public Policy, University of Birmingham, United Kingdom. His interests include Public Administration, e-Governance, infrastructure projects, policy analysis and public finance. He is an avid sports lover and a keen photographer.
