Union Minister of State, Health & Family Welfare, Prof. S P Baghel inaugurated a blood donation camp at RML Hospital in New Delhi, emphasizing the noble cause of blood donation and its significance in Indian culture and tradition. He called upon all citizens to participate in the countrywide Raktdaan Amrit Mahotsav and donate blood, highlighting that it is not only a service to society but also a requirement for the country.

The theme for this year’s World Blood Donor Day campaign is ‘Give blood, give plasma, share life, share often’, which focuses on the importance of blood and plasma donation for patients who require lifelong transfusion support.

Prof. S P Baghel emphasized the need for blood donation by stating that in India, blood transfusion is required every 2 seconds, with an average demand of 14.6 million units of blood annually, resulting in a shortage of 1 million units. He highlighted the importance of regular voluntary blood donations, especially for patients with conditions such as cancer, sickle cell anemia, and thalassemia. He debunked myths surrounding blood donation, stating that it does not cause weakness and the body can quickly recover its blood volume.

The minister stressed the importance of creating awareness about blood donation among future generations and in rural areas where myths surrounding blood donation still persist. He appreciated the selfless act of blood donors and felicitated those who had donated blood more than 100 times. He also mentioned the E-Rakt Kosh portal, a centralized blood bank management information system that serves as a national repository of blood donors, ensuring a robust record and expediting blood availability when needed.
