Shri Santanu Kumar Agrahari IAS (Jharkhand 2012) presently Private Secretary to the Minister of State for Jal Shakti & Railways (Shri V. Somanna) has been appointed as Director – National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) under the D/o Pharmaceuticals for a period upto 28.11.2026 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).
Shri Santanu Kumar Agrahari, an accomplished officer of the Indian Administrative Service, has carved a niche for himself through a blend of medical knowledge and administrative excellence. With a professional journey that reflects both depth and diversity, he represents the evolving strength and adaptability of Indian Bureaucracy. Currently serving at the Centre in the Ministry of Jal Shakti as Private Secretary to the Minister of State at Director equivalent level, he plays a crucial role in policy coordination and executive decision-making at the highest levels of government.
Academically, Shri Agrahari brings a unique background to public administration. He holds an M.B.B.S. degree from S.N. Medical College, Agra, under Dr. B.R.A. University, where he graduated with First Division. His medical training has provided him with a strong understanding of public health systems and grassroots realities, which has enriched his administrative approach, particularly in sectors involving welfare, health, and human development.
Over the years, Shri Agrahari has held several important assignments both at the Centre and in his cadre state of Jharkhand. His current role as Private Secretary to the Minister of State, Jal Shakti, since January 2026, follows his earlier tenure in the same Ministry at Deputy Secretary equivalent level from November 2024 to December 2025. In these positions, he has been closely involved in matters related to water resources, river development, and drinking water initiatives, contributing to policy execution and inter-departmental coordination.
Prior to this, he served in the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment as Private Secretary to the Minister, where he handled sensitive and impactful policy areas related to social welfare, empowerment of marginalized communities, and inclusive governance. His brief stint on compulsory wait in the same ministry in 2024 was followed by continued responsibilities at the Centre, reflecting his steady administrative trajectory.
Shri Agrahari has also gained valuable experience in national-level data and governance systems during his tenure as Director (Census Operations) at the Ministry of Home Affairs. Though brief, this role added to his understanding of data-driven policy planning and large-scale administrative exercises.
In his cadre state, Jharkhand, he has held several key field and departmental positions. As District Magistrate-cum-Deputy Commissioner in districts such as Palamu, West Singhbhum (Chaibassa), and Jamtara, he demonstrated effective leadership in district administration, law and order management, and implementation of government schemes. His tenure as Municipal Commissioner of Ranchi Municipal Corporation further strengthened his experience in urban governance, infrastructure development, and civic administration.
He also served as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary in the Department of Food, Civil Supplies and Consumer Affairs, where he was involved in ensuring efficient public distribution systems and consumer protection mechanisms. Earlier, as Civil Defence Commissioner in Ranchi, he handled responsibilities related to disaster preparedness and emergency response.
His initial years in service included foundational roles such as Sub-Divisional Officer in Latehar and Assistant Collector in Palamu, following his training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA), Mussoorie. These assignments helped him build a strong base in grassroots administration and public service delivery.
