IAS Sanjay Prasad IAS: The Administrative Anchor of the Yogi Government
Shri Sanjay Prasad IAS, widely regarded as one of the most influential bureaucrats in the Government of Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as a central figure in the governance architecture under Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath. With an academic background marked by distinction—holding a Postgraduate degree in Geography with First division—his intellectual grounding has complemented a long and strategically significant administrative career.
Currently serving as Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister and Principal Secretary (Home, Prison, Gopan & Visa/Passport), Shri Sanjay Prasad occupies a position that places him at the core of policy coordination, internal security oversight, and executive decision-making in the state. His role involves direct interface with the Chief Minister’s Office, coordination across departments, and supervision of sensitive governance domains, including law and order and internal administration.
A member of the 1995 batch of the Indian Administrative Service, Shri Sanjay Prasad began his career with training at the prestigious Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration. His early field postings as Joint Magistrate in Azamgarh, Muzaffarnagar, and Ranikhet provided him exposure to sub-divisional administration and revenue management. These formative years established his familiarity with grassroots governance structures and district-level challenges.
As Chief Development Officer in Gorakhpur, he gained hands-on experience in rural development and programme implementation. This was followed by a series of District Magistrate assignments across Maharajganj, Lakhimpur Kheri, Bahraich, Faizabad, Firozabad, Ghazipur, Agra, and Allahabad. Serving as District Magistrate in multiple and diverse districts is often considered the crucible of an IAS officer’s administrative maturity. In these roles, Shri Sanjay Prasad handled law and order management, developmental coordination, land revenue administration, and public grievance systems with structured oversight.
His tenure as District Magistrate in key districts such as Agra and Allahabad (now Prayagraj) required administrative balance in politically and socially sensitive environments. The ability to maintain institutional stability while driving developmental initiatives contributed to his reputation as a steady and dependable officer.
Beyond district administration, Shri Sanjay Prasad transitioned into important Secretariat and divisional leadership roles. As Divisional Commissioner of Faizabad, he supervised multi-district administration, overseeing coordination between district magistrates and ensuring policy implementation across the division. His experience at this level expanded his perspective from district-specific governance to broader regional planning and supervision.
In the Uttar Pradesh Secretariat, he held significant portfolios including Secretary, Technical Education; Secretary, Infrastructure & Industrial Development; Secretary, Public Enterprises; and Secretary, Health & Family Welfare. These assignments reflected his administrative versatility across sectors ranging from industrial policy and public enterprise management to health system oversight.
Particularly notable was his role in Infrastructure & Industrial Development, where policy coordination for industrial expansion and investment facilitation required strategic planning and inter-departmental collaboration. His tenure in Health & Family Welfare involved oversight of system-level healthcare administration during a period of expanding public health infrastructure in the state.
He also served in the Energy Department and held the position of Managing Director in state power utilities, gaining experience in corporate-style public sector management. Such roles demanded a blend of financial prudence, operational efficiency, and regulatory awareness.
Between 2015 and 2019, Shri Sanjay Prasad served on Central Deputation in the Government of India as Joint Secretary in the Defence Department and earlier in the Science & Technology domain. Working at the national level broadened his exposure to strategic policymaking, defence production frameworks, and technological governance. Central deputation assignments are often regarded as an important milestone in an IAS officer’s career, providing insights into national policy architecture and inter-ministerial coordination.
Upon returning to Uttar Pradesh, he assumed increasingly pivotal roles in the Chief Minister’s Office. Appointed Secretary to the Chief Minister in 2019, and subsequently Principal Secretary to the Chief Minister in 2020, his responsibilities expanded significantly. In 2022, he was entrusted with the additional charge of Principal Secretary, Home Department—one of the most sensitive and powerful portfolios in any state government.
The Home Department oversees internal security, policing coordination, prisons administration, and critical law and order mechanisms. Managing this portfolio alongside responsibilities in the Chief Minister’s Office places Shri Sanjay Prasad at the strategic nerve centre of governance in Uttar Pradesh. The convergence of administrative coordination and internal security oversight under his charge underscores the trust reposed in him by the political leadership.
Observers often describe his administrative style as composed, methodical, and institution-focused. His academic grounding in Geography appears to inform a systemic understanding of regional dynamics, resource planning, and spatial governance. Over the years, his career reflects steady progression rather than abrupt transitions, indicating institutional confidence in his capabilities.
From district administration in challenging terrains to policy leadership in infrastructure, health, energy, and defence, and now serving as the principal bureaucratic interface of the Chief Minister’s Office, Shri Sanjay Prasad’s journey mirrors the evolving demands of governance in India’s largest state. His trajectory illustrates how field experience, sectoral diversity, and strategic discretion combine to shape high-level administrative leadership.
Within the broader narrative of the Indian Bureaucracy, Shri Sanjay Prasad IAS stands as a prominent example of how sustained field exposure, cross-sector expertise, and executive coordination can converge in one of the most consequential roles in state governance today.
