On Sunday, the new Parliament House in India will be dedicated to the nation in a ceremony where Honorable Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi will receive and install the sacred symbol of fair and equitable governance, known as Sengol. This symbol holds historical significance as it was accepted by the first Prime Minister of India, Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, on the night of August 14, 1947, marking the transfer of power from the British to the Indians.

Home Minister Shri Amit Shah highlighted the importance of this event, stating that even after 75 years of independence, many people in India are unaware of this significant moment when India’s transfer of power occurred through the handing over of the Sengol to Pt Jawaharlal Nehru. The Sengol is derived from the Tamil word “Semmai,” meaning “Righteousness,” and it symbolizes the commitment to rule justly and fairly. It features a hand-carved Nandi, representing “Nyaya” or justice.

The Honorable Prime Minister decided to adopt the Sengol as a national symbol, representing the Amrit Kaal (Era of Nectar). The same Sengol from 1947 will be installed in the Lok Sabha, close to the Speaker’s podium, where it will be prominently displayed and taken out on special occasions.

The Home Minister emphasized that the Parliament House is the most appropriate and sacred place to install the historic Sengol. This installation serves as a reminder of the spirit of August 15, 1947, symbolizing boundless hope, possibilities, and the commitment to build a strong and prosperous nation.

The Tamil Nadu government has proudly acknowledged the role played by the Mutts (religious institutions) of the state in the Hindu Religious & Charitable Endowments Department (HR&CE) Policy Note of 2021-22. The presidents of all 20 Adheenams (religious mutts) will be present at the ceremony to offer their blessings.

To spread awareness about this historic event, a special website (sengol1947.ignca.gov.in) was launched, providing details and downloadable videos about the Sengol. The government aims to make this historic event known to the people of India and considers it a matter of pride for all.

Union Minister for Culture and Tourism, Shri G Kishan Reddy, Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting and Youth Affairs & Sports, Shri Anurag Singh Thakur, and Secretary, Ministry of Culture, Shri Govind Mohan were also present at the press conference where these details were shared.
