PM laid Foundation Stone for New Greenfield Airport at Hollongi, AP

The Foundation Stone of Construction of New Greenfield Airport at Hollongi Airport in Arunachal Pradesh was laid by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India on 09th February, 2019.  The Foundation Stone Laying Ceremony took place in the august presence of Hon’ble Governor of Arunachal Pradesh, Brig. (Dr.) B.D. Mishra (Retd.)  Shri. Pema Khandu, Chief Minister, Arunachal Pradesh, Shri.Kiren Rijiju Union Minister of State for Home Affairs and Shri. Chowna Mein, Deputy Chief Minister, Arunachal Pradesh.

The Airports Authority of India, under the supervision of the Ministry of Civil Aviation is committed to provide air connectivity and develop as well as upgrade airport infrastructure across the country. Due to the proactive measures being undertaken by the Government, India is already one of the fastest growing civil aviation markets in the world.

Considering the importance of air connectivity to the capital city of Arunachal Pradesh, a Greenfield Airport is proposed to be constructed at Hollongi, 15 kms from Itanagar. Planned on 667 acres of land the airport will be able to handle Airbus -320 type of aircraft operations.

The greenfield Airport will be constructed in phases. The Phase-I will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs.955 cr which would include construction of runway of 2300 x 45m, apron a state–of-the-art terminal building Technical Block cum ATC, a fire station, isolation bay, installation of DVOR & ILS.

The New Domestic Terminal building of the Greenfield Airport will have an area of 4100 sqm to handle a peak hour capacity of 200 passengers. The terminal will be equipped with all modern passenger facilities, consisting of pre-engineered structure with glass & steel envelop having profile sheet roofing on steel truss.

While addressing the public gathering, Hon’ble Prime Minister said “The new project will be completed in record time for better connectivity for people of Arunachal Pradesh. Further Prime Minister emphasised that once Hollongi Airport is operationalized it will boost the economy of the state. The project will boost tourism, employment growth.

Itanagar, the capital of Arunachal Pradesh is situated at the foothills of Himalayas. Presently no airport exists in vicinity of Itanagar, the closest one being Lilabari Airport which is at a distance of 80km in the state of Assam and takes around 3 hrs to reach by road.  An airport to connect the capital city is a much needed aspiration of local community which will also act as a primary gateway to the state of Arunachal Pradesh.

Hon`ble PM also inaugurated the Retrofitted Tezu Airport on this occasion.  AAI under took the development and up gradation work for ATR-72 type of aircraft operations on request of state government. After the extension of runway and refurbishment of existing terminal building, the airport is ready for operations of ATR-72 type of aircraft. In order to provide better services in future, a modern terminal building has also been planned for Tezu Airport.

Hollongi and Tezu Airport will fulfill the aspirations of local community of flying and will also play a significant role in boosting tourism and comprehensive development of the region.
