On May 27, 2023, NITI Aayog, the policy think tank of the Government of India, will be hosting its 8th Governing Council Meeting in New Delhi. The meeting will be held at the new Convention Centre in Pragati Maidan and will revolve around the theme of “Viksit Bharat @ 2047: Role of Team India.”

The day-long meeting will cover eight prominent themes, namely Viksit Bharat@2047, thrust on MSMEs, infrastructure and investments, minimizing compliances, women empowerment, health and nutrition, skill development, and Gati Shakti for area development and social infrastructure.

The meeting will witness the participation of Chief Ministers and Lt. Governors from all states and union territories, Union Ministers as ex-officio members, and the Vice Chairman and Members of NITI Aayog. As the Chairman of NITI Aayog, the Prime Minister will preside over the meeting.

Prior to the 8th Governing Council Meeting, the 2nd Chief Secretaries Conference was held in January 2023. The conference served as a preparatory platform to extensively discuss the themes that will be addressed in the meeting. Stakeholder consultations, brainstorming sessions with subject experts, academia, and practitioners were conducted to gather diverse perspectives from the grassroots level. The conference saw the participation of select Secretaries from the Government of India and Chief Secretaries from all states and union territories, who actively shared best practices and policy insights.

India, as the world’s fifth-largest economy and the most populous nation, is poised for accelerated growth over the next 25 years. The 8th Governing Council Meeting provides an opportunity to chart a roadmap for Viksit Bharat by 2047, wherein the central and state governments can collaborate as Team India. This vision holds significance in the international context, as India’s socio-economic growth and transformation can have a positive and multiplier effect globally.

The meeting takes place against the backdrop of India’s G20 Presidency. India’s G20 motto, “One Earth, One Family, One Future,” reflects its civilizational values and its vision for the role of each country in shaping the future of our planet. The world has high expectations from India in terms of values-based leadership and its ability to deliver large-scale development. The collaboration between the central and state governments will play a crucial role in achieving this unique development trajectory.

India’s progress is intrinsically linked with the progress of its states. As highlighted by the Prime Minister in his 76th Independence Day address, “When our States grow, India grows.” This guiding principle will drive India’s inclusive and sustainable vision for the next 25 years. The 8th Governing Council Meeting aims to strengthen the cooperation between the central and state governments and foster partnerships to realize the goal of Viksit Bharat @ 2047.
