Ms. Meetu Agarwal IRS (IT 2010) has been appointed as Director in the Department of Defence Production, Delhi for a period of five years.
The post of Director in the Department of Defence Production is a senior administrative and policy-level position under the Ministry of Defence. The officer plays an important role in strengthening India’s defence manufacturing ecosystem, promoting indigenous production and supporting the country’s long-term defence modernisation objectives. The Department of Defence Production is responsible for policy formulation, coordination and implementation of programmes related to defence manufacturing, public sector defence undertakings and strategic industrial growth in the defence sector.
The Director is generally a senior officer appointed by the Government of India and is expected to possess extensive administrative experience along with a strong understanding of defence production, procurement systems and strategic governance. The officer works closely with senior officials of the armed forces, defence public sector undertakings, private industry representatives and various government agencies to ensure effective implementation of defence manufacturing policies and projects.

The role involves reviewing progress of important defence manufacturing projects and resolving administrative or procedural issues to ensure timely completion of programmes related to defence preparedness and military modernisation.
Another important aspect of the position includes supporting defence procurement and acquisition processes through coordination among the armed forces, production agencies and policy-making authorities. The Director may also be involved in matters related to industrial licensing, defence exports, foreign investment proposals and promotion of private sector participation in defence manufacturing.
The officer additionally plays a vital role in encouraging innovation and industrial growth by engaging with private companies, startups and research organisations associated with the defence sector. In recent years, the Department of Defence Production has become increasingly significant due to India’s focus on expanding domestic manufacturing capabilities and enhancing defence exports in the global market.
Apart from policy and coordination functions, the Director is also responsible for administrative supervision, financial monitoring, compliance with government procedures and effective utilisation of resources within the assigned division or department.
