Dr Krishnendu Kundu appointed as Scientist ‘G’ in the Ministry
Dr. Krishnendu Kundu presently Senior Principal Scientist- Council of Scientific and Industrial Research-Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI) has been appointed as Scientist ‘G’ in the Ministry.
Dr. Krishnendu Kundu is a distinguished scientist in the field of bioenergy and sustainable engineering, currently serving as Senior Principal Scientist at the Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-CMERI), Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery (CoEFM), Ludhiana. With over two decades of research and professional experience, he has made significant contributions to renewable energy technologies, particularly in biodiesel, biogas, and waste-to-wealth innovations.
Dr. Kundu’s academic foundation is rooted in agricultural engineering. He earned his B.Tech from Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswavidyalaya with distinction, followed by M.Tech and Ph.D. degrees in Farm Machinery and Power Engineering from Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology, Pantnagar. He also qualified the ICAR-NET, reflecting his strong academic credentials and research aptitude.
Beginning his career as a Junior Scientist at CSIR-CMERI in 2005, Dr. Kundu steadily rose through the ranks to his current leadership position. His expertise spans biodiesel and biogas production, process optimization, plant design (batch, semi-continuous, and fully automatic), fuel testing, engine performance analysis, briquetting technology, algal biofuels, and sustainable waste management.
A key highlight of his career is the development of several innovative technologies, including fully automatic biodiesel plants, biomass briquetting systems, kitchen waste biogas plants, and even a 100% biofuelled tractor. His work has had direct applications in rural development, clean energy generation, and industrial sustainability. He has also played a pivotal role in establishing advanced laboratories under the Biofuel Department at CSIR-CMERI, strengthening research infrastructure in the energy domain.
Dr. Kundu has led and contributed to numerous high-impact projects funded by agencies such as DST, DSIR, and PCRA, addressing challenges in renewable energy and agricultural mechanization. His research output includes 19 SCI publications, multiple book chapters, and extensive conference contributions. He also holds patents and design registrations in biodiesel processing and biomass technologies.
An accomplished academic mentor, he has guided 6 doctoral, 39 master’s, and 37 undergraduate scholars. His excellence has been recognized through several prestigious awards, including the Young Engineer Award and Outstanding Bioscientist Award. A Fellow and member of multiple professional bodies, Dr. Kundu continues to drive innovation in sustainable energy, contributing significantly to India’s clean energy and self-reliance goals.
