Smt. Justice Revati Prashant Mohite Dere presently Judge- Bombay High Court has been appointed as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court.

Justice Revati Prashant Mohite Dere, born on 17 April 1965 in Pune, Maharashtra, is a distinguished jurist whose legal career reflects intellectual depth, professional dedication, and a strong commitment to the principles of justice. With decades of experience at the Bar and on the Bench, she has earned recognition for her clarity of thought, balanced judicial approach, and consistent engagement with complex legal issues across criminal, civil, and constitutional domains. Her journey from a meritorious student to the Chief Justice of a High Court illustrates a career shaped by scholarship, discipline, and public service.

Justice Dere completed her early education at St. Joseph’s High School, Pashan, Pune. She later pursued her higher secondary studies at Fergusson College, Pune, where she studied in the Arts stream. During this period, she demonstrated exceptional academic ability and received the National Merit Certificate for securing a place in the merit list. Her academic excellence continued during her legal studies at Symbiosis Law College, Pune, where she completed the five-year integrated law course. She graduated with a First Class with Distinction in both B.S.L. and LL.B. and secured the second rank in the merit list of University of Pune for her LL.B. examination, an achievement that underscored her strong grasp of legal principles and analytical skills.

Motivated to further deepen her understanding of law, Justice Dere pursued a Master of Laws (LL.M.) at the prestigious University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Her academic pursuit there was supported by the highly regarded Cambridge Commonwealth Trust Scholarship, reflecting international recognition of her academic promise. The experience of studying at Cambridge provided her with exposure to global legal perspectives and comparative constitutional ideas, enriching the foundation of her later professional work.

Upon returning to India after completing her LL.M., Justice Dere began her professional legal career in Pune by joining the chambers of her father, eminent Senior Advocate Vijayrao A. Mohite. She subsequently trained under Barrister Raja S. Bhosale in Mumbai, gaining exposure to diverse areas of litigation. Over time, she developed a strong practice before the Bombay High Court, where she appeared in matters on the criminal, civil, and constitutional sides, and also regularly practiced before the Sessions Court. Her practice was marked by careful legal preparation and a reputation for thorough advocacy.

In addition to her independent legal practice, Justice Dere served in several important public law roles. She worked as an Assistant Government Pleader in the Writ Cell of the High Court (Appellate Side), Mumbai, and later served as Senior Counsel (Group I and II) for the Union of India. She was also appointed as an Additional Public Prosecutor representing the Union of India before the High Court. Prior to her elevation to the Bench, she served as Government Pleader and Public Prosecutor for the State of Maharashtra. During this period, she appeared in numerous significant matters, including Public Interest Litigations and confirmation cases, which often involve careful scrutiny of criminal justice processes.

Recognizing her experience and professional competence, Justice Revati Mohite Dere was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Bombay High Court on 21 June 2013. She was subsequently elevated as a permanent Judge of the Court on 2 March 2016. Over the years, she developed a reputation for delivering thoughtful judgments and handling complex criminal and constitutional matters with diligence and clarity.

In recognition of her judicial experience and leadership, she was appointed Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on 1 January 2026 . As Chief Justice, she continues to contribute to the effective administration of justice and institutional strengthening of the judiciary. Justice Revati Prashant Mohite Dere is due to retire on 16 April 2027, concluding a distinguished judicial career marked by scholarship, integrity, and service to the legal system.
