Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo, born on 5 June 1964, is a distinguished member of the Indian judiciary whose career reflects dedication, discipline, and a deep commitment to the rule of law. The son of Late Sarat Chandra Sahoo, a widely respected criminal law practitioner, Justice Sahoo grew up in an environment closely connected with legal scholarship and courtroom practice. This early exposure played a formative role in shaping his interest in the legal profession and instilled in him the values of integrity, diligence, and professional responsibility that have remained hallmarks of his judicial journey.

Justice Sahoo began his academic pursuits in Cuttack, Odisha. He passed his matriculation from Nuabazar High School, Cuttack, before continuing his higher studies at Stewart Science College, Cuttack, where he completed both his Intermediate Science (I.Sc.) and Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degrees. Demonstrating a keen interest in languages and literature alongside his scientific education, he pursued postgraduate studies privately and successfully completed Master’s degrees in English as well as Oriya from Utkal University, Bhubaneswar. His multidisciplinary academic background reflects a broad intellectual foundation, combining analytical thinking with strong linguistic and literary abilities—qualities that later proved valuable in legal reasoning and judicial writing.

With a clear inclination toward the legal profession, Justice Sahoo subsequently pursued his Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) from Madhusudan Law University (formerly The Law College), Cuttack. After completing his legal education, he was enrolled as an Advocate on 26 November 1989 under the Orissa State Bar Council, Cuttack. His early years in the profession were guided by eminent legal practitioners, including his father Late Sarat Chandra Sahoo and Dr. Manoranjan Panda, an expert in service and constitutional law. Practicing under such accomplished mentors provided him with valuable exposure to complex legal issues and helped him develop a strong grounding in both criminal and service law.

Over the years, Justice Sahoo established himself as a committed and capable advocate. His practice primarily focused on criminal law and service matters, areas that require careful interpretation of statutes and a balanced understanding of procedural and substantive law. He practiced extensively before the Orissa High Court and also appeared before district courts and various specialized tribunals across the State of Odisha, including consumer forums, the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT), and the State Administrative Tribunal (SAT). His broad practice across multiple judicial and quasi-judicial forums enabled him to gain comprehensive experience in diverse branches of law and contributed to his reputation as a diligent and thoughtful legal professional.

Recognizing his professional competence, integrity, and deep understanding of the law, Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo was elevated as a Judge of the Orissa High Court on 2 July 2014. During his tenure on the bench, he has been known for his balanced approach to adjudication and careful attention to legal principles, while also demonstrating sensitivity to the broader interests of justice. His judgments reflect clarity of reasoning and a commitment to upholding constitutional values.

In recognition of his long and distinguished service to the judiciary, Justice Sahoo was appointed as the Chief Justice of the Patna High Court, taking oath on 7 January 2026. This elevation marks an important milestone in his judicial career and underscores the confidence reposed in his leadership and judicial acumen. With decades of legal and judicial experience behind him, Justice Sangam Kumar Sahoo continues to contribute meaningfully to the administration of justice, exemplifying the dedication and professionalism that define the higher judiciary in India.
