Shri Jishnu Dev Varma, also known as Jishnu Deb Barman (Debbarma) and Jishnu Karta, is an Indian politician and public figure who currently serves as the Governor of Telangana. Known for his diverse interests and contributions to public life, he has been actively involved in politics, cultural activities, and social initiatives for several decades. In addition to his political career, he is recognized as an artist, writer, and poet, reflecting his engagement with the cultural and intellectual life of the country.
Shri Jishnu Dev Varma was born on August 15, 1957, in Agartala, the capital of Tripura. He comes from a distinguished family with a strong legacy of public service. His father, Raj Kumar Ramendra Kishore Dev Varma, was a senior civil servant who served as the Chief Secretary of Tripura, while his mother, Maha Raj Kumari Kamal Prava Devi, belonged to a respected royal lineage of the region. Growing up in such an environment helped shape his interest in governance, culture, and public affairs.
For his higher education, Shri Varma pursued Bachelor of Arts with Honours in English from Maharaja Bir Bikram College, which was affiliated with University of Calcutta. His academic background in literature and humanities contributed to his later pursuits as a writer and poet, complementing his public and political activities.
Shri Jishnu Dev Varma entered public life with a strong focus on cultural and regional development. Between 1989 and 1993, he served as a Member of the Advisory Committee of the North Eastern Council, where he contributed to discussions on development and policy initiatives for the northeastern region of India. In 1993, he became the Convener of the Tripura Chapter of Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) and also served as the Coordinator of the Trust for the North-East region, working toward the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage.
The same year marked a significant step in his political journey when he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Soon after joining the party, he was elected as a National Council Member from Tripura, reflecting the trust placed in him by the party leadership. He also served as the General Secretary of the Tripura Pradesh BJP, where he handled important organizational responsibilities and contributed to strengthening the party’s presence in the state.
During the 1996, 1998, and 1999 general elections, Shri Varma contested the Lok Sabha elections from the Tripura East (Scheduled Tribe Reserved) constituency, actively participating in national electoral politics and representing the aspirations of people from the region.
A significant milestone in his political career came when he served as the Deputy Chief Minister of the Government of Tripura. During this tenure, he held several important portfolios including Finance, Panchayat, Rural Development, Power, Science & Technology, and Planning and Coordination. In these roles, he worked toward strengthening financial administration, promoting rural development, improving power infrastructure, and encouraging technological advancement in the state.
Over the years, Shri Jishnu Dev Varma has built a reputation as a leader who combines administrative experience with cultural sensitivity. His contributions extend beyond politics into literature and the arts, reflecting a multidimensional personality committed to public service and intellectual engagement.
