Guwahati, August 9 – Blending the warmth of Raksha Bandhan with a strong message for dignity at work, Ashwani Kumar IAS, Director of the Department of Information Technology, Electronics & Communication (DITEC), Assam, reaffirmed his commitment to fostering a workplace where women feel safe, respected, and empowered to voice their concerns without hesitation.
During this year’s celebrations at DITEC, eleven women colleagues tied Rakhis on Kumar’s wrist. More than a cultural exchange, the moment became a platform to renew his pledge to challenge behaviours and practices that permit intimidation, harassment, or disrespect.
Citing a 2023 national survey that revealed over half of working women in India have faced harassment or bullying, Kumar stressed that such conduct persists not because it is inevitable, but because it too often goes unchallenged. He urged leaders to break the silence that enables such acts, taking personal responsibility to confront and eliminate them.
Drawing attention to instances where government offices—sometimes even those led by senior officers—fail to extend basic courtesy, particularly to women, Kumar warned that overlooking such behaviour risks embedding it into workplace culture.
Kumar envisions an office as a “second home” where discipline coexists with empathy, and where efficiency is never achieved at the cost of dignity. True leadership, he believes, inspires loyalty through fairness and respect rather than fear or authority alone. By celebrating Raksha Bandhan not just as a symbolic occasion but as a meaningful commitment, Kumar called for a zero-tolerance policy against any form of exploitation. His aim is to make respect, safety, and equality a daily norm rather than a ceremonial gesture.
Colleagues have lauded his initiative, noting that visible, heartfelt commitments from leadership can shape inclusive and harassment-free workspaces. Observers say Kumar’s effort harmonises tradition with progressive values, showing that true workplace reform begins with individual resolve and cultural sensitivity.
IndianBureaucracy.com welcomes this thoughtful and timely initiative, appreciating the way it weaves together cultural heritage with modern principles of equality and safety.
