Shri Govind Mohan IAS (Sikkim 1989) has been given extension as Home Secretary-Ministry of Home Affairs beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. 30.09.2025 upto
22.08.2026 by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.

Shri Govind Mohan, an officer of the 1989 batch of the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) from the Sikkim cadre, has been granted an extension in service as Home Secretary in the Ministry of Home Affairs beyond his superannuation date, 30th September 2025. His administrative journey reflects deep experience in core sectors such as finance, economic affairs, culture, and internal security over more than three decades of public service.

Shri Mohan holds an academic background in Electrical Engineering, having graduated with a B.Tech. from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), BHU Varanasi, securing First Class. To complement his technical grounding, he pursued a Post Graduate Diploma in Management from the Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Ahmedabad, also with First Class, enhancing his administrative and leadership capabilities.

He took over as Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs in August 2024, following a brief tenure as Officer on Special Duty (OSD) in the same ministry. Prior to this critical assignment, he served as Secretary, Ministry of Culture, where he oversaw the promotion of India’s diverse cultural heritage and archaeological legacy from October 2021 to August 2024.

His association with the Ministry of Home Affairs spans several roles, including stints as Additional Secretary and Joint Secretary between 2018 and 2022. His tenure in the Home Ministry provided him with exposure to key areas of internal security and administrative coordination at the national level.

Shri Govind Mohan’s expertise in economic and financial policy is substantial. He served in the Department of Economic Affairs in various capacities including Joint Secretary, Director, and Deputy Secretary, dealing with policy matters and economic planning. His international exposure includes a notable tenure as Minister (Economic) at the Embassy of India in Washington DC from 2012 to 2015, where he contributed to India’s bilateral financial engagements.

He has also worked in the Cabinet Secretariat, and Ministry of Finance (Department of Expenditure), which further broadened his policy oversight experience. In his cadre postings, he served in senior district-level and liaison roles including as Deputy Commissioner of Gangtok, Jt. Resident Commissioner, and SDM, gaining ground-level insights into administration.

In earlier years, Shri Mohan served as Private Secretary to Union Ministers in the Ministries of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, and Information & Broadcasting, reflecting trusted administrative engagement in ministerial offices.

His career path demonstrates a balance of field and secretariat experience, backed by consistent performance in domains ranging from district administration to complex financial and home affairs portfolios. As Home Secretary, he continues to contribute to national policy and security matters with focus and administrative acumen.
