Dr. Chandan Banerjee presently Deputy Director General- National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) has been appointed as Scientist ‘G’ in the Ministry.

Dr. Chandan Banerjee is a leading solar energy scientist and technologist, currently serving as Deputy Director General (Scientist ‘F’) at the National Institute of Solar Energy since 2016. With a distinguished career spanning academia, industry, and government, he has made significant contributions to the advancement of solar photovoltaic technologies in India.

Dr. Banerjee completed his Master’s degree in Physics from Jadavpur University in 1999, followed by an M.Tech. from Indian Institute of Technology Kharagpur in 2000. He earned his Ph.D. in 2003 through Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science in collaboration with Jadavpur University, specializing in advanced materials and solar cell research.

His academic excellence earned him the prestigious JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship, under which he conducted advanced research at the Tokyo Institute of Technology from 2004 to 2007. This international exposure significantly strengthened his expertise in thin-film solar technologies and semiconductor materials.

In 2007, Dr. Banerjee transitioned to industry, joining Hind High Vacuum Company Pvt. Ltd., Bengaluru, where he worked until 2013. During this period, he played a pioneering role in developing India’s first indigenous amorphous silicon-based thin-film solar module production line, in collaboration with IACS Kolkata. This achievement marked a significant milestone in India’s solar manufacturing capabilities.

He was subsequently awarded the prestigious National Solar Science Fellowship by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and served at Indian Institute of Engineering Science and Technology Shibpur from 2013 to 2016. His research portfolio includes more than fifty peer-reviewed publications and eleven patents in solar technologies.

Dr. Banerjee has extensive experience in managing large-scale projects under industry-academia-government collaborations, successfully leading over ten projects as Principal or Co-Principal Investigator. His research interests encompass thin-film materials, heterojunction and PERC solar cells, transparent conducting oxides, and photovoltaic module reliability.

The National Institute of Solar Energy (NISE) is India’s apex national institution dedicated to research, development, and capacity building in solar energy. Functioning under the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), NISE plays a pivotal role in supporting the country’s transition towards clean and sustainable energy.

Located in Gurugram, the institute serves as a center of excellence for solar technology innovation, testing, and standardization. It is actively involved in research areas such as photovoltaic technologies, solar thermal systems, energy storage, and grid integration. NISE also provides testing and certification facilities to ensure the quality and reliability of solar products deployed across India.

A key mandate of NISE is human resource development. The institute conducts training programs, skill development initiatives, and awareness campaigns to promote solar energy adoption at various levels, including government agencies, industries, and entrepreneurs.

NISE supports national missions such as the Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission and contributes to policy formulation and implementation. It collaborates with academic institutions, industries, and international organizations to strengthen India’s solar ecosystem.

Overall, NISE plays a crucial role in driving innovation, ensuring quality standards, and accelerating the deployment of solar energy solutions in India.

Through his leadership at NISE, Dr. Banerjee continues to contribute significantly to India’s renewable energy mission and solar innovation ecosystem.
