Dr Ravi Kumar Gandham VPPS appointed as Director- BRIC-NIAB, Hyderabad
Dr. Ravi Kumar Gandham VPPS presently Principal Scientist & HoD- Animal Biotechnology, ICAR, National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR), Karnal, Haryana has been appointed as Director- Biotechnology Research and Innovation Council-National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (BRIC-NIAB), Hyderabad by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet.
Dr. Ravi Kumar Gandham is a distinguished scientist in the field of animal genomics and computational biology, currently serving at the National Institute of Animal Biotechnology (NIAB). He joined the institute on 24 May 2018 and has since been actively contributing to advanced research in livestock genomics and host-pathogen interactions.
Dr. Gandham holds a B.V.Sc. & A.H. degree from Sri Venkateswara Veterinary University (formerly Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University), Tirupati. He pursued his M.Sc. in Dairying (Animal Genetics and Breeding) from the National Dairy Research Institute, Karnal, and earned his Ph.D. in Animal Genetics from the Indian Veterinary Research Institute, Izatnagar. Further enhancing his expertise, he received specialized training in Computational Biology and Genomics at the Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis.
With a strong interdisciplinary background, Dr. Gandham combines computational and experimental biology to address complex biological problems. His research focuses on host-pathogen interactions, where he employs high-throughput genomics and proteomics approaches to understand molecular mechanisms of disease. He also utilizes advanced tools such as CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing to validate key molecular findings.
In the domain of livestock genomics, he is engaged in developing SNP chips for indigenous cattle breeds and contributing to genome assembly efforts, supporting genetic improvement and conservation strategies.
Dr. Gandham has successfully handled several externally funded research projects and has received multiple prestigious awards. These include the ICAR Hari Om Ashram Trust Team National Award (2017), ICAR–IVRI Best Teacher Award (2015–16), and the FM Burnett Team Award by the Indian Society of Veterinary Immunology & Biotechnology (2011). His contributions continue to advance biotechnology-driven solutions in animal health and productivity.
