DAE status on India’s Nuclear Energy Target

PIB News Update: Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) Development of North-Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh has informed that Seven (07) reactor units with a capacity of 5300 MW are under construction and excavation is in progress for start of construction of four (04) more units having a capacity of 3400 MW. The Government has accorded administrative approval and financial sanction of ten (10) more reactor units of 700 MW each.

Additionally, the Government has accorded ‘in-principle’ approval to five (05) sites of which four (04) sites are earmarked for housing six large size reactor units at each site in cooperation with foreign technology partners and one site for housing four reactor units based on indigenous technology.

The Government has taken several measures for augmenting nuclear power capacity. These include:

1. Accord of administrative approval and financial sanction of – ten (10) indigenous 700 MW Pressurized Heavy Water Reactors (PHWRs) to be set up in fleet mode & two (02) units of Light Water Reactors (LWRs) to be set up in cooperation with Russian Federation.
2. Creation of Indian Nuclear Insurance Pool (INIP) in the context of Civil Liability for Nuclear Damage (CLND) Act 2010.
3. Amendment of the Atomic Energy Act to enable Joint Ventures of Public Sector Companies to set up nuclear power projects.
4. Entering into enabling agreements with foreign countries for nuclear power cooperation.
