As per recently published data, during April-July’14 Indian Railways reported a 9.3% increase in revenues and 4.25% increase in volumes in commodity-wise freight traffic compared to same time last year. Railways emerged as the most preferred form of transportation for Coal, also earning the the most for the Indian Railway a staggering Rs 14,107 crores out of a total revenue of Rs 32,451 crores, or 43.5% of the total earnings from freights during this period. Cement earned about 9.8% of revenues whilst, Food grains the 3rd highest earner contribution a mere 8.7% .
