Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) has successfully commissioned the first unit of 2×30 MW Tuirial Hydro Electric Project (HEP) in Mizoram. Significantly, this is the first large-rating hydro power project in the state of Mizoram.

Located in Kolasib district of Mizoram, the greenfield project is being set up by the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO) on the river Tuirial. The second unit of the project is also in advanced stages of execution. Power generation from Tuirial HEP will result in reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and will contribute towards achieving a low carbon development path for the nation.

The order for the Electrical & Mechanical (E&M) package of two units of 30 MW each, placed on BHEL by NEEPCO, envisaged design, manufacture, supply, installation and commissioning of the complete E&M package including vertical shaft Francis Turbines & matching Generators. The equipment has been supplied by BHEL units at Bhopal, Jhansi, Rudrapur and Bengaluru and the execution of work on site has been carried out by the company’s Power Sector Eastern Region.

The entire installed hydro capacity of NEEPCO of 755 MW has been supplied & commissioned by BHEL. The other hydro project of NEEPCO currently under execution by BHEL is the 4×150 MW Kameng HEP in Arunachal Pradesh. Some of the major hydro projects commissioned for NEEPCO by BHEL are the 3×135 MW Rangandi HEP in Arunachal Pradesh and 4×50 MW Kopili HEP in Assam.

BHEL has always been at the forefront in going to difficult terrains and setting up power projects. In the North Eastern states, BHEL has installed around 3,100 MW of power generating capacity, accounting for more than 75% of the total installed capacity in the region. This includes the 726 MW gas-based Palatana power project in Tripura, equipped with advanced class gas turbine and 2 units of 250 MW coal-based sets at Bongaigaon in Assam.

BHEL is presently executing around 6,000 MW of hydroelectric Projects – about half of which are outside India. BHEL’s global footprint in hydropower is spread across more than 500 sets, at over 180 different power projects, totaling to 29 GW, including several sets in the most challenging terrains – the Himalayas and Central Asia. BHEL’s hydro plants are successfully and efficiently performing in India and across the world, including Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Bhutan, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Rwanda, Taiwan, Tajikistan, Thailand and Vietnam.
