The Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals, in collaboration with the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), is organizing a B20 conference for the global business community with a focus on the Chemicals & Petrochemical sector in New Delhi. The event will be inaugurated by Shri Bhagwanth Khuba, Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers & New and Renewable Energy, in the presence of the Secretary of the Department of Chemicals and Petrochemicals and representatives from G20 member countries.

Over 500 delegates from India and overseas, including industry associations and government representatives from B20 nations, will participate in the conference. Representatives from Germany, Mexico, Russia, Hungary, the United States of America, Belgium, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, and South Korea are expected to attend.

The conference aims to improve the safety and sustainable ecosystem for the chemicals and petrochemicals industry, focusing on the pillars of De-carbonization, Circular Economy, Biodiversity, and Water Conservation. It seeks to promote sustainable development and discuss solutions for various industry challenges. The conference will facilitate knowledge exchange and identify opportunities for sustainability and circularity among G20 countries.

The chemicals and petrochemicals industry plays a vital role in India’s economic development, providing building blocks and raw materials for downstream products. Given its potential for growth and nation-building, G20 members have significant opportunities to enhance capacity and achieve ambitious growth targets.

During the event, discussions will cover topics such as sustainability in the chemicals industry, pathways to achieve net-zero/sustainability, research and development, technology and digital transformation, and inclusive and adaptive skills for a sustainable ecosystem.

The conference, organized by the Department of Chemicals & Petrochemicals and CII, is part of India’s presidency of the G20. The Business20 (B20) serves as the official G20 dialogue forum for the global business community, promoting policy recommendations to stimulate economic growth and development.

The objectives of the conference include establishing a collective ecosystem for compliance and regulatory excellence, changing the perception of the chemical industry, promoting smart manufacturing, and showcasing India’s commitment to a circular economy and sustainable development. The expected outcomes of the conference include enhancing manufacturing capabilities, making the industry more sustainable through green technologies, strengthening collaboration between industry and government, and developing a collective action plan for sustainable chemistry, including carbon dioxide reduction and capture technologies.
