Presently serving as Chairman-cum-Managing Director of Northern Coalfields Limited (NCL), Shri Sairam’s elevation to the helm of CIL stands as a testament to his remarkable leadership, vision, and over three decades of dedicated service in the energy sector.
A distinguished graduate in Mining Engineering from NIT Raipur, Shri Sairam embodies the qualities of a visionary technocrat who has successfully blended academic rigor with practical expertise. Over his illustrious career of more than 33 years, he has made significant contributions across the coal industry spectrum—ranging from mine operations and planning to logistics, regulatory affairs, and corporate strategy. His professional journey reflects a consistent pursuit of excellence, innovation, and sustainability.
Shri Sairam’s commitment to continuous learning and leadership development is evident from his academic endeavors. He pursued a 15-month full-time residential Post Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) in Energy Management at the NTPC School of Business, Delhi. As part of this program, he underwent a 15-day global immersion program at the prestigious Nanyang Business School, Singapore, which broadened his outlook on international energy markets. Further, his participation in the study of the Just Energy Transition in Germany and Poland deepened his insights into sustainable energy practices and global transition strategies.
His leadership at Central Coalfields Limited (CCL), where he served as Director (Technical), marked a transformative phase. He played a pivotal role in expanding the company’s organic growth trajectory and enhancing coal logistics, including the landmark tripling of the Tori-Shivpur railway line, which substantially boosted coal evacuation to power consumers across the country. He also championed several First Mile Connectivity projects, including the state-of-the-art North Urimiri CHP-Silo, which streamlined coal dispatch systems. His efforts in obtaining Forest and Environment Clearances and in conceptualizing both greenfield and brownfield projects stand as milestones in CCL’s growth journey.
As CMD of Northern Coalfields Limited, Shri Sairam has demonstrated exemplary leadership by driving operational efficiency, fostering innovation, and ensuring a balance between business growth and environmental stewardship. His vision has aligned NCL’s performance with the broader sustainability goals of Coal India Limited, with a particular focus on community welfare and employee-centric initiatives. He has always championed the belief that industrial progress must go hand in hand with social responsibility, ensuring that NCL’s contributions positively impacted the lives of people in mining regions.
Earlier, as Executive Director at Coal India Limited, Shri Sairam led critical divisions such as Employee Welfare, Public Relations, and Legal. In these roles, he worked tirelessly to enhance organizational harmony, communication, and compliance, while simultaneously aligning Coal India’s sustainability agenda with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
