Shri Abhishek Pathak IPS (Chhattisgarg 2004) presently IG- BSF has been given extension of deputation tenure for a period of one year beyond 10.03.2026 (total 8 years), in relaxation of the IPS Tenure Policy by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet .
The Border Security Force (BSF) is one of India’s प्रमुख Central Armed Police Forces, tasked with guarding the country’s borders and ensuring national security. It was established on December 1, 1965, in the aftermath of the Indo-Pak War of 1965, to provide a dedicated and specialized force for border protection during both peace and wartime.
The BSF is primarily responsible for securing India’s borders with Pakistan in the west and Bangladesh in the east. These borders present diverse challenges, including desert terrain in Rajasthan, riverine areas in West Bengal and Assam, and densely populated regions along the Bangladesh border. The force plays a crucial role in preventing infiltration, cross-border terrorism, smuggling, and other illegal activities.
Functioning under the administrative control of the Ministry of Home Affairs, the BSF is often referred to as India’s “first line of defence” in peacetime. In addition to border guarding, the force is also deployed for internal security duties, counter-insurgency operations, and maintaining law and order during elections and emergencies.
The BSF is known for its high level of training, discipline, and operational readiness. Personnel are trained in a variety of skills, including surveillance, intelligence gathering, combat tactics, and disaster response. Organizationally, the BSF is headed by a Director General (DG) and has a structured hierarchy comprising Special DGs, Additional DGs, Inspectors General (IGs), Deputy Inspectors General (DIGs), and Commandants. Each level plays a vital role in maintaining operational efficiency and administrative control across its vast deployments.
Beyond security, the BSF is also involved in humanitarian and civic activities, especially in border areas. It conducts medical camps, educational initiatives, and community outreach programs to build trust among local populations. Additionally, the BSF contributes significantly during natural disasters, providing rescue and relief assistance.
Over the years, the Border Security Force has evolved into a modern, multi-dimensional force capable of addressing complex security challenges.
