Vikram K Doraiswami IFS appointed next Ambassador of India to China
Shri Vikram K Doraiswami IFS (1992) presently High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the People’s Republic of China.
Shri Vikram K Doraiswami, IFS, is a distinguished career diplomat whose journey in the Indian Foreign Service since 1992 reflects depth, versatility, and a steady commitment to advancing India’s global interests. Before entering government service, he spent a year as a journalist—an experience that arguably sharpened his analytical abilities and communication skills. He holds a Master’s degree in History from the University of Delhi, a discipline that has clearly informed his nuanced understanding of international relations and geopolitical contexts.
Following his in-service training in New Delhi from 1992 to 1993, Mr. Doraiswami embarked on his diplomatic career with a posting to the High Commission of India in Hong Kong in May 1994 as Third Secretary. During this tenure, he demonstrated notable initiative by learning Chinese, completing an elective diploma at the New Asia Yale-in-Asia language school of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. This linguistic and cultural investment proved valuable when he was subsequently posted to the Embassy of India in Beijing in September 1996, where he served for nearly four years, gaining critical exposure to one of India’s most significant bilateral relationships.
In 2000, upon returning to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in New Delhi, he was appointed Deputy Chief of Protocol (Ceremonials), a role requiring precision and diplomatic finesse. His capabilities led to his secondment to the Prime Minister’s Office two years later, where he served as Private Secretary to the Prime Minister of India—an assignment that reflects a high degree of trust and responsibility. In 2006, he was posted to the Permanent Mission of India to the United Nations in New York as Political Counsellor, engaging with complex multilateral issues. By October 2009, he had taken on the role of India’s Consul General in Johannesburg, South Africa, further expanding his diplomatic footprint.
Mr. Doraiswami returned to the MEA in July 2011 as Head of the Division for the South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), where he played a key role in regional diplomacy. Notably, he served as Coordinator for the Fourth BRICS Summit held in New Delhi in March 2012, contributing to India’s engagement with emerging global economies.
From October 2012 to October 2014, he served as Joint Secretary of the Americas Division, overseeing India’s relations across a diverse and strategically important region. His appointment as Ambassador of India to Uzbekistan in October 2014 marked his first ambassadorial role, followed by his assignment as Ambassador to the Republic of Korea in April 2015. In both positions, he was instrumental in strengthening bilateral ties, reflecting a balanced blend of strategic insight and diplomatic tact.
Returning to Headquarters in July 2018, Mr. Doraiswami served as Head of Division for Bangladesh and Myanmar, two of India’s most crucial neighbours. In April 2019, he was entrusted with establishing a new Indo-Pacific Division at the MEA—an indication of his forward-looking approach and the government’s confidence in his leadership. Following his promotion in December 2019, he was designated Additional Secretary, handling International Organizations and Summits, a portfolio central to India’s multilateral engagement.
Before his current assignment, he served as the High Commissioner of India to Bangladesh from October 2020 until 18 September 2022, where he contributed to further consolidating one of India’s most important bilateral partnerships. On 23 September 2022, he assumed charge as the High Commissioner of India to the United Kingdom, continuing his distinguished diplomatic service at a critical global post.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. Doraiswami is known for his wide-ranging interests, including reading, sports, fitness, travel, history, and jazz. A long-standing admirer of P.G. Wodehouse, he is also linguistically adept, speaking Chinese, French, and some Korean. His personal and professional life reflects balance and depth; his wife, Sangeeta, works in education, and they have a son.
Overall, Shri Vikram K Doraiswami’s career stands out for its consistency, intellectual grounding, and quiet effectiveness—qualities that have made him a respected figure in Indian diplomacy and a valued contributor to India’s engagement with the world.
Indian Bureaucracy News wishes Shri Vikram K Doraiswami the very best.
