UNDP and MoHUA together organise national workshop on Urban Livelihoods

Ranchi, Jharkhand, hosted a two-day national workshop organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA) under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), in collaboration with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The workshop brought together approximately 150 delegates from across the country, including State Mission Directors of the State Urban Livelihoods Mission, senior officials from MoHUA and Jharkhand state government, UNDP India representatives, sector experts, and participants from research institutions, start-ups, philanthropies, and donor organizations.

Key discussions centered on emerging trends and opportunities in urban livelihoods, particularly emphasizing resilience and empowerment for women in urban India. Multiple panel sessions explored strategies for fostering women-led urban livelihoods, as well as emerging sectors in climate, services, retail, and manufacturing. Topics also included the Multidimensional Poverty Index (NMPI) and the role of philanthropies in addressing urban poverty through innovative financial investments.

The workshop served as a platform for states to share best practices in women-led urban livelihoods and economic enhancement, encouraging peer learning and the replication of successful models.

During the event, Shri Rahul Kapoor, Joint Secretary, MoHUA, introduced the concept of urban care models, emphasizing the importance of care infrastructure and services for the urban poor. He highlighted the need for a holistic approach to urban planning, integrating care philosophy into city design to create environments conducive to the well-being of women, children, and the elderly.

Ms. Isabelle Tschan, Resident Representative of UNDP India, highlighted the importance of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) – Sustainable Cities and Communities. She emphasized the critical role of National and State Urban Livelihood Missions in advancing inclusive, safe, resilient, and sustainable urban development. UNDP expressed its commitment to working with DAY-NULM to address urban poverty through livelihood promotion strategies and tailored solutions for communities.

About DAY-NULM: Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM), launched by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aims to reduce poverty and vulnerability among urban poor households by providing access to gainful self-employment and skilled wage employment opportunities. The mission also addresses the livelihood concerns of urban street vendors and provides shelters with essential services to the urban homeless.
