Shri Suneet Mehta IFS (2007) presently High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Fiji, has been concurrently accredited as the next High Commissioner of India to the Kingdom of Tonga, with residence in Suva.

Shri Suneet Mehta is a senior diplomat of the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), belonging to the 2007 batch, with extensive experience in international diplomacy, multilateral engagement, and strategic policy matters. With nearly two decades of professional service, he has contributed significantly to India’s diplomatic outreach through key assignments at Indian Missions abroad as well as at the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi.

Mr. Mehta has a strong academic and professional background. He holds a degree in Commerce and possesses dual professional qualifications as a Chartered Accountant and a Company Secretary. These qualifications have provided him with a deep understanding of financial systems, corporate governance, and economic policy, skills that have proven valuable in his diplomatic and administrative assignments. His multidisciplinary expertise enables him to navigate complex international economic and institutional frameworks effectively.

Over the course of his 17-year diplomatic career, Mr. Mehta has served in several important international postings representing the interests of India. Early in his career, he served at the Embassy of India in Madrid, Spain from 2009 to 2010. During this period, he contributed to strengthening bilateral relations between India and Spain, supporting diplomatic engagements and promoting cooperation across sectors.

He later served at the Embassy of India in Washington, D.C., United States from 2014 to 2017. In this role, he handled matters relating to the United States Congress, an assignment that required close engagement with lawmakers, policymakers, and various institutions in the United States. His work in Washington played an important role in strengthening India–US legislative and policy engagement during a period of expanding strategic partnership between the two countries.

Mr. Mehta also served as the Deputy High Commissioner at the High Commission of India in Canberra, Australia from 2021 to 2024. During his tenure in Canberra, he was involved in advancing India–Australia bilateral cooperation across diverse sectors, including trade, education, technology, and strategic affairs. The period also witnessed growing collaboration between the two countries in the Indo-Pacific region, and the High Commission played an important role in strengthening these ties.

At the headquarters of the Ministry of External Affairs in New Delhi, Mr. Mehta handled several important portfolios relating to India’s external relations. His responsibilities included working on desks dealing with countries in Europe as well as multilateral matters connected to the United Nations. These assignments required coordination with multiple governments and international institutions, contributing to India’s engagement in global governance and diplomacy.

In addition to his work in the Ministry of External Affairs, Mr. Mehta also served on deputation to the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs. During this period, he handled matters related to international cooperation in the urban development sector. His responsibilities included work related to the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT), a flagship initiative of the Government of India aimed at improving basic civic infrastructure in cities and towns across the country. He also contributed to a major national infrastructure initiative concerning the redevelopment of the Central Vista in New Delhi, a project of national importance designed to modernize India’s administrative and parliamentary infrastructure.

The High Commissioner of India to the Kingdom of Tonga plays an important role in strengthening diplomatic engagement and expanding cooperation between India and the Pacific island nation. As the official representative of the Government of India, the High Commissioner is responsible for promoting bilateral relations, enhancing development cooperation, and representing India’s strategic interests in the Pacific region.

One of the key responsibilities of the High Commissioner is to facilitate political dialogue and diplomatic coordination between India and the government of Tonga.
