India becomes second largest steel producer of Crude Steel

Government has notified the Steel Scrap Recycling Policy in November 2019. The policy provides a framework to facilitate and promote establishment of metal scrapping centres in India for scientific processing and recycling of ferrous scrap generated from various sources. The decision to set up scrapping centres by Public Sector Units /Private Sector is taken based on commercial considerations.

Recycled steel is used as an input in steel making process as scrap. Scrap is used as a charge mix in the production of Crude Steel via Electric Arc Furnace (EAF), Induction Furnace (IF) and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) routes. The current requirement of scrap in total Crude Steel production of 120 million tonnes (MT) in the country is approximately 30 MT [26 MT domestically generated scrap + 4 MT imports of scrap].

This information was given by the Union Minister of State for Steel and Rural Development, Shri Fuggan Singh Kulaste, in a written reply to a question in Rajya Sabha today.
