The Department of Justice (DoJ), Ministry of Law and Justice, Government of India is participating in the ongoing New Delhi World Book Fair (7-15 January 2017) at Pragati Maidan, organized by the National Book Trust (Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India) and India Trade Promotion Organisation, under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of India).
The DoJ is exhibiting and distributing (free of cost) a repository of knowledge products and information, education and communication materials (IEC materials) produced under the GoI and United Nations Development Programme project “Access to Justice for Marginalised Persons” and the GoI Project “Access to Justice for Marginalised in eight states of North East and Jammu and Kashmir”. The IEC material, being displayed at the book fair, presents relevant social welfare legislations in a simplified and accurate formats, suitable and useful for the public at large. The core aim of this material is to impart legal literacy in simple, easy and accurate language, an objective which is at the core of the mandate of DoJ.
The DoJ has collaborated with the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) and Delhi State Legal Services Authority (DSLSA) for this event. In addition, free legal aid help desk has been set up at the stall, where panel lawyers and para legal volunteers from the DSLSA are available on all days to provide legal advice and information on accessing legal aid services provided by NALSA.

About the Project
The project “Access to Justice for the marginalised” is being implemented in eight States of Bihar, Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Odisha.
The key objective of the project is strengthening access to justice for the marginalised (particularly the poor, women, scheduled castes, scheduled tribes, and minorities), by developing strategies that address barriers to accessing justice in legal, social, economic and political domains. The project interventions seek to empower the poor and marginalized sections of the society with knowledge on their legal rights and means to claim them, by raising legal literacy amongst them. The project also aims to improve justice delivery mechanisms by strengthening their capacities and increasing their engagement and communication process with the vulnerable groups. Phase I of the project was undertaken between 2009 and 2012. The current phase, Phase II is for a five-year period between May 2013 and December 2017.
