Shri Rohit Rathish IFS (2006) presently Joint Secretary in the Ministry, has been appointed as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Seychelles.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has announced the appointment of Shri Rohit Rathish, a 2006-batch officer of the Indian Foreign Service, as the next High Commissioner of India to the Republic of Seychelles. This appointment underscores India’s commitment to strengthening relations with the strategically located island nation, an important partner in the Indian Ocean Region.
Who is IFS Rohit Rathish | Rathish joined the Indian Foreign Service in 2006 after securing an exceptional third rank in the Civil Services Examination, a distinction that reflected his intellectual caliber and determination. Over the past 18 years, he has served in diverse capacities, both in India and abroad, steadily building a reputation as a thoughtful and capable diplomat.
Currently serving as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Rathish has played a significant role in shaping India’s foreign policy at a crucial moment. He was closely involved in the 2023 G20 Summit hosted by India, which drew global attention for its successful outcomes and effective coordination. Though his work was largely behind the scenes, colleagues and observers alike noted his contributions to the event’s smooth execution and to projecting India’s leadership role on the global stage.
A consistent advocate for innovation in diplomacy, Rathish has been a vocal proponent of India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) framework. He has particularly emphasized its value for countries of the Global South, highlighting how India’s inclusive, scalable digital systems can serve as models for development. His work in this area reflects not only technical foresight but also a commitment to India’s emerging role as a provider of digital solutions to the world.
Rathish also brings significant field experience to his new role. From 2021, he served as Deputy High Commissioner to the Maldives, where his steady engagement contributed to further strengthening India-Maldives relations at a time of regional geopolitical complexity. His ability to balance sensitivity with firmness reinforced India’s position as a trusted partner to the Maldives.
Earlier, he served as Deputy Consul at the Indian Consulate General in San Francisco, one of India’s key missions in the United States. In this posting, he worked closely with the Indian diaspora, while also engaging on issues related to technology and economic cooperation. Exposure to Silicon Valley’s dynamism added to his insights into global technology trends, which later informed his policy advocacy in MEA.
Within the diplomatic community, Rathish is described as “very intelligent” and among the most promising diplomats of his generation. Known for his low public profile, he prefers quiet efficiency over visibility, earning respect through the quality of his work rather than public attention. His colleagues note his intellectual clarity, attention to detail, and ability to remain composed under pressure.
As he prepares to assume office in Seychelles, Rathish will take charge of a relationship that has deepened over the decades. India and Seychelles share close cooperation in areas such as maritime security, climate action, capacity building, and cultural exchange. The island nation is central to India’s Indian Ocean vision, including the “Security and Growth for All in the Region” (SAGAR) initiative.
Rathish’s appointment reflects both confidence in his abilities and the importance India places on its ties with Seychelles. With his proven experience in policy, negotiations, and international cooperation, he is well positioned to advance India-Seychelles relations and contribute meaningfully to India’s strategic role in the Indian Ocean Region.
