REC Ltd to Transform Learning in West Bengal with 20 Smart Classrooms
REC Limited, a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise (CPSE) under the Ministry of Power and one of India’s leading Non-Banking Financial Companies (NBFCs), has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening digital education through a new Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative in West Bengal. The company has signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Career Forum for the implementation of the project titled “Establishment of 20 Smart Classrooms in Government Schools of Alipurduar, West Bengal.” The initiative aims to transform the learning environment in government schools by introducing technology-enabled classrooms that will enhance the quality of education for students, particularly in rural and tribal regions of the state.
The Memorandum of Agreement was signed on July 14, 2026, by Shri Arun Kumar Tyagi, Executive Director (CSR), REC Limited, and Shri Anant Chauhan, Chairman, Career Forum. The signing ceremony was held in the presence of Shri L. B. Nautiyal, Head of Department (CSR), REC Limited, along with senior officials from REC Limited and representatives of Career Forum, marking another milestone in REC’s sustained efforts to create meaningful social impact through its CSR initiatives.
Under the project, 20 Smart Classrooms will be established in selected Government schools across Alipurduar district in West Bengal. The initiative is expected to directly benefit more than 1,500 students, providing them with access to modern digital learning resources and interactive teaching tools. Equipped with smart boards, digital content, multimedia teaching aids, and advanced classroom technology, these classrooms are expected to create an engaging and collaborative learning environment that supports improved academic outcomes.
The project is designed to strengthen digital education infrastructure in areas where access to modern educational resources remains limited. Alipurduar, with its significant rural and tribal population, presents an opportunity to bridge educational disparities by integrating technology into classroom teaching. By equipping schools with digital learning facilities, the initiative seeks to ensure that students from underserved communities receive the same opportunities for quality education as their counterparts in urban areas.
Technology-enabled classrooms have emerged as an effective means of improving classroom participation, enhancing conceptual understanding, and promoting interactive learning. Digital teaching methods enable educators to explain complex concepts through visual and multimedia content, making lessons more engaging and easier to comprehend. Students also benefit from greater exposure to digital tools, helping them develop technological skills that are increasingly essential in today’s knowledge-driven economy.
The Smart Classroom initiative aligns with national efforts to promote digital learning and modernise educational infrastructure across the country. It complements the Government’s emphasis on technology-driven education, digital inclusion, and improved learning outcomes through innovative teaching methodologies. By supporting government schools with contemporary educational infrastructure, REC Limited is contributing to the broader objective of creating equitable access to quality education for all.
The project also underscores REC Limited’s continued focus on inclusive development through its Corporate Social Responsibility programmes. Over the years, the company has implemented several impactful CSR initiatives across sectors such as education, healthcare, rural development, sanitation, skill development, environmental sustainability, and community infrastructure. Education has remained one of the key focus areas of REC’s CSR strategy, recognising its transformative role in empowering individuals and fostering long-term socio-economic progress.
Through partnerships with credible implementing agencies such as Career Forum, REC ensures that its CSR projects are executed efficiently and deliver measurable outcomes. The establishment of Smart Classrooms represents not only an investment in educational infrastructure but also in the future of thousands of young learners who will benefit from improved teaching methodologies and enhanced learning experiences.
Beyond improving academic performance, the initiative is expected to promote digital literacy among students and teachers alike. Access to interactive educational technology will encourage innovative teaching practices, foster curiosity, and prepare students for an increasingly technology-oriented world. Teachers will also benefit from enhanced instructional tools that enable more effective classroom engagement and knowledge dissemination.
The initiative reflects REC Limited’s vision of creating sustainable and inclusive social impact by investing in education and human capital development. By supporting digital education in government schools, particularly in rural and tribal communities, REC is helping reduce the digital divide while promoting equal opportunities for learning and personal growth.
As India continues its journey towards becoming a digitally empowered society, initiatives such as the Establishment of 20 Smart Classrooms in Government Schools of Alipurduar demonstrate how public sector enterprises can complement government efforts through targeted CSR interventions. With more than 1,500 students set to benefit, the project is expected to make a meaningful contribution towards strengthening educational outcomes, promoting digital inclusion, and building a more equitable learning ecosystem in West Bengal.
