Dr. Ravi Kota IAS (AM 1993) presently Chief Secretary – Assam tenure is extended
for a period of 06 (six) months beyond the date of his superannuation i.e. from 01/05/2026 to 31/10/2026.
Dr. Ravi Kota, an accomplished officer of the Indian Administrative Service, represents a rare blend of academic brilliance and administrative depth. A Ph.D. in Agriculture and a Gold Medalist, he brings intellectual rigour and grounded field experience to public administration. Over nearly three decades of distinguished service, Dr. Kota has traversed district administration, financial governance, rural development, national security, and international economic diplomacy, emerging as one of the most respected names in contemporary Indian Bureaucracy.
Currently serving as Chief Secretary to the Government of Assam since April 2024, Dr. Kota stands at the apex of the state’s administrative structure. As Chief Secretary, he oversees coordination across departments, policy execution, and governance reforms, ensuring that the developmental vision of the Government of Assam translates into measurable outcomes. His elevation to this role reflects the trust reposed in his balanced judgment, financial acumen, and long-standing familiarity with the state’s administrative landscape.
Before assuming this top responsibility, Dr. Kota served as Minister (Economic) in the Department of Economic Affairs, Ministry of Finance, at Washington DC (2020–2023), holding a position equivalent to Joint Secretary. This prestigious foreign assignment placed him at the heart of global financial diplomacy, where he represented India’s economic interests, engaged with multilateral institutions, and contributed to strengthening international fiscal cooperation. At the national level, Dr. Kota has held key assignments in the Ministry of Finance, including Joint Secretary in the Department of Economic Affairs and roles connected with the Finance Commission. Earlier, as Principal Secretary and Commissioner & Secretary in the Finance Department of Assam, he played a pivotal role in state-level financial consolidation and resource optimization.

As Deputy Commissioner and District Magistrate of Golaghat, Sivasagar, and Jorhat in Assam, he managed law and order, revenue administration, and district development during critical periods. His tenure in rural development as State Project Director of the Assam Rural Infrastructure & Agricultural Services Project (ARIASP) and as Secretary in the Agriculture Department showcased his domain expertise in agriculture—an area closely aligned with his doctoral specialization.
Dr. Kota has also contributed significantly at the Centre in diverse ministries. As Director in the Department of Personnel and Training and in the Ministry of Consumer Affairs, Food & Public Distribution, he was involved in policy formulation, public distribution management, and personnel administration. His role as General Manager in the Food Corporation of India further strengthened his exposure to food security mechanisms and supply chain governance. Additionally, his assignment with NATGRID in the Ministry of Home Affairs reflected his adaptability to emerging national security frameworks.
