Indian Bureaucracy News | Ramesh Kumar Verma ITradeS given premature repatriation to parent cadre

Shri Ramesh Kumar Verma ITradeS (2013) presently Deputy Secretary- Department of Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade has been given premature repatriation to his parent cadre.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) is one of the most influential arms of the Government of India, operating under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. It plays a central role in shaping the country’s industrial and investment landscape by formulating, implementing, and monitoring policies that promote industrial growth, foreign investment, intellectual property reforms, and the ease of doing business. Over the years, DPIIT has emerged not only as a policy-making institution but also as a facilitator of business and entrepreneurial development across sectors.

Originally known as the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP), the organisation was renamed DPIIT in January 2019 to reflect its expanding mandate, which now includes oversight of internal trade alongside industry promotion. The renaming signalled a more comprehensive approach toward aligning domestic and international trade, strengthening the global competitiveness of Indian businesses, and supporting emerging sectors such as startups, logistics, retail, and e-commerce.

Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT)

One of DPIIT’s most recognised responsibilities is monitoring and facilitating Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) policy. The department reviews FDI norms, introduces liberalisation measures when necessary, and ensures smooth inflow of foreign capital into India. By simplifying regulatory frameworks and reducing compliance burdens, DPIIT has significantly contributed to making India a more attractive destination for investors. Many landmark reforms, like automatic route liberalisations in various critical sectors, have been introduced under its leadership.

DPIIT also manages the national programme to improve the Ease of Doing Business, working closely with state governments and industry stakeholders to remove bottlenecks, digitise services, and enhance transparency. India’s dramatic rise in the World Bank’s Ease of Doing Business rankings over past years has been reflective of these efforts. DPIIT has enabled several simplifications such as single-window clearance systems, reduction of procedural timelines, and integration of regulatory departments on unified portals. These steps have reduced administrative delays and encouraged entrepreneurship.

Another pillar of the department’s vision is the development of startups and innovation. DPIIT is the nodal body for the Startup India initiative, which provides recognition, funding support, tax incentives, mentorship, and ecosystem development to young entrepreneurs. More than one lakh startups have now been recognised under the programme, signalling the rapid rise of India’s innovation-driven economy. Through initiatives like regulatory easing for angel tax, seed fund schemes, and innovation hubs, DPIIT aims to develop India into a global startup powerhouse.

In addition, DPIIT is responsible for the administration of intellectual property rights (IPR), including patents, trademarks, designs, and geographical indications. It has implemented wide-ranging reforms such as faster processing timelines, digital filing systems, and fee reductions for startups, women, and small enterprises. These changes have encouraged greater innovation and increased filings across all categories of IPR.

The department also focuses on improving the logistics landscape of India. Under the National Logistics Policy, DPIIT has been pushing for reduced logistics costs, multimodal transport efficiency, and digital integration of supply chain systems. The government’s PM Gati Shakti plan and the Unified Logistics Interface Platform (ULIP) are examples of initiatives supported by DPIIT to promote real-time connectivity and infrastructure coordination across the country.

Furthermore, DPIIT monitors the performance of industrial growth across sectors through indices like the Index of Industrial Production (IIP) and works toward targeted policy interventions to boost manufacturing and exports. Collaboration with stakeholders—including chambers of commerce, MSMEs, multinational corporations, e-commerce platforms, and state governments—ensures that policymaking remains holistic and responsive to industry needs.

In the broader governance ecosystem, developments surrounding DPIIT often form part of Latest Indian Bureaucracy News, as appointments, postings, and leadership expansions within the department directly influence the trajectory of industrial and trade reforms. DPIIT’s continued focus on innovation, investment, regulatory clarity, and digital transformation positions it as a critical driver in India’s aspiration to become a $5-trillion economy and a global industrial powerhouse.

Indian Bureaucracy Dot Com wishes Shri Ramesh Kumar Verma the very best.
