Ms. Pratima Satish Kumar Verma IAS (Bihar 2002) has been appointed as Commissioner – National Education Society for Tribal Affairs (NESTS) (JS level), under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs for a tenure of five years.
Ms. Pratima Satish Kumar Verma, an Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Bihar cadre, is a distinguished civil servant known for her strong academic credentials and wide-ranging administrative experience across sectors such as taxation, urban development, social welfare, and technical education. She holds an M.B.B.S. degree from Gulbarga University and is a Gold Medalist, reflecting her academic excellence in the field of medicine. Her medical background has provided her with a scientific and analytical approach to governance, enabling her to handle complex administrative challenges with precision and clarity.
Ms. Verma began her administrative career with grassroots-level assignments, including her role as Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) in Muzaffarpur. In this position, she gained valuable experience in land revenue management, law and order, and sub-divisional administration. Her early exposure to field administration helped her build a strong foundation in governance and public service delivery.
She went on to serve as Deputy Development Commissioner in Nalanda, where she contributed to district-level planning and development initiatives. Her leadership abilities were further recognized with her appointment as District Magistrate and Collector in multiple districts, including Sheikhpura, Vaishali, Bhojpur, and Sitamarhi. As District Magistrate, she was responsible for maintaining law and order, implementing government schemes, and ensuring efficient delivery of public services. Her tenure in these districts reflects her ability to handle administrative responsibilities effectively while addressing local development challenges.
Ms. Verma also held important positions in the state secretariat. She served in the Health & Family Welfare Department as Joint Secretary, where her medical background proved particularly valuable in policy implementation and healthcare administration. She later worked in the Personnel and Administrative Reforms Department, contributing to personnel management and administrative governance.
Her career includes key assignments in the energy and urban development sectors. She briefly served as Managing Director of the North Bihar Power Distribution Company Limited, where she gained experience in energy management and infrastructure. Additionally, she held roles as CEO of the Patna Metropolitan Area Authority and Managing Director of Bihar Rajya Jal Parshad, contributing to urban planning, water management, and infrastructure development.
A significant phase of her career has been her long association with the Commercial Taxes Department in Bihar. She served as Additional Commissioner (GST), Commissioner (GST), and later as Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Commercial Taxes. In these roles, she played a crucial part in the implementation and administration of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) regime in the state. Her work focused on strengthening tax administration, improving compliance, and enhancing revenue collection systems.
Ms. Verma also contributed to administrative reforms as Additional Mission Director in the Bihar Prashasanik Sudhar Mission (BPSM), where she worked on improving governance processes and service delivery mechanisms. Her tenure on inter-cadre deputation to Karnataka further broadened her administrative exposure and experience.
In the social sector, she served as Managing Director of the Bihar State Women Development Corporation, where she worked on initiatives related to women empowerment and social welfare. Her experience in this domain reflects her commitment to inclusive development and social justice.
Most recently, she served as Secretary, Department of Science, Technology and Technical Education in Bihar, where she contributed to strengthening technical education and promoting innovation and skill development in the state.
