Indian Bureaucracy News, Kolkata, July 14, 2026In a fresh round of transfers in the state, the Suvendu Adhikari-led West Bengal government on July 14, 2026 issued another major bureaucratic reshuffle. A total of 33 officers have been either reassigned or transferred, including 28 Indian Police Service (IPS) officers and five West Bengal Police Service (WBPS) officers.

The move follows the recently held, closely contested state elections and appears aimed at resetting the police administration after the large-scale transfers carried out during that period under the Election Commission’s directions. The changes focus on specialised wings, reorganising zonal commands, and filling key positions in metropolitan as well as district-level postings, strengthening administrative control and realigning the law-and-order machinery to improve coordination and effectiveness within the state’s police system.

Quick Summery : Rank-Wise Distribution & Key Appointments

The reshuffle impacts officers across multiple ranks. At the apex level, Natarajan Ramesh Babu IPS, of 1991 batch, has been elevated as the new DG & IGP of CID, West Bengal, while retaining additional charge of Correctional Services—making him one of the most powerful officers in the state. He takes over the state CID from Supratim Sarkar, while Siddh Nath Gupta IPS (1992), who is currently DG & IGP, West Bengal (In-charge), continues in his present role.

An officer of the 1991 batch, Natarajan Ramesh Babu has had a varied administrative career within the West Bengal cadre. His role during the 2007 Nandigram police firing came under scrutiny during the tenure of the then Left Front (CPM-led) government, with a subsequent CBI inquiry in 2012 recommending departmental action for operational lapses. This was followed by a period in less prominent assignments.

His postings during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections also drew attention, when the Election Commission of India appointed him as Commissioner of Police, Bidhannagar—one of the state’s most sensitive urban postings—as part of mid-poll measures to ensure neutrality. The Mamata Banerjee-led West Bengal government had objected to the move, and he was shifted out soon after the Model Code of Conduct was lifted. In recent years, he has served as Director General of Correctional Services, before being appointed to head the CID in the latest reshuffle.

Supratim Sarkar, IPS, moves from CID and Intelligence Branch (additional charge) to head Telecommunications, while Vishal Garg, IPS, takes over as the ADG & IGP of the Intelligence Branch. In the Additional Director General rank, K Jayaraman, IPS, has been appointed Director of Economic Offences, and Anand Kumar, IPS, has been posted as ADG & IGP of the Western Zone. The Inspector General level sees Praveen Kumar Tripathi, IPS, moving to Home Guard, and Sukesh Kumar Jain, IPS, taking charge of the North Bengal Region.

Zone-Wise Breakdown

The reshuffle demonstrates a clear geographic strategy. Kolkata Metropolitan Area (including Kolkata Police, Bidhannagar, Howrah, and Barrackpore) accounts for the largest share with 15 officers posted or retained here. Key postings include Rathod Amitkumar Bharat, IPS, as CP of Bidhannagar, V S R Ananthnag, IPS, continuing as Joint CP (Admin) with additional STF charge, and Dinesh Kumar, IPS, as DIG of Barasat Range with additional STF duties. North Bengal sees 8 officers, including David Ivan Lepcha, IPS, as DIG of Raiganj Range, Yeilwad Shrikanth Jagannathrao, IPS, as SP of Darjeeling, and Manish Joshi, IPS, as SP of Cooch Behar. The Western Zone receives only one top-level posting—Anand Kumar, IPS—while the South 24 Parganas districts (Baruipur, Sunderban) receive 5 WBPS officers in critical zonal and rural policing roles.

State Headquarters & State-Wide Units (Kolkata-Based)

A significant 10 officers have been retained or posted at State Headquarters in Kolkata, highlighting the government’s focus on strengthening centralised command structures. This includes Natarajan Ramesh Babu, IPS (CID + Correctional Services), Supratim Sarkar, IPS (Telecommunications), Tripurari Atharv, IPS (Traffic & Road Safety), Vishal Garg, IPS (IB), Praveen Kumar Tripathi, IPS (Home Guard), Sudheer Kumar Neelakantam, IPS (STF), and Jaspreet Singh, IPS along with Soumik Sengupta, WBPS posted to Cyber Crime Wing (CCW) – a key anti-corruption and vigilance wing. Additionally, Rajiv Kumar, IPS, and Siddharth Dhapola, IPS, have been posted to STF, Kolkata and STF, West Bengal respectively, indicating a major revamp of the state’s counter-insurgency and special operations framework.
