Shri P S Thuingaleng IRS (IT 2008) presently General Manager- Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), Guwahati (Assam-North East Region) under Ministry of Tribal Affairs has been given pre-mature repatriation to his parent cadre for availing benefit of promotion in his parent cadre.
The post of General Manager at Tribal Co-operative Marketing Development Federation of India (TRIFED), Guwahati, Assam–North East Region, is an important leadership and administrative position responsible for promoting tribal welfare, livelihood generation and marketing support for tribal communities across the North Eastern states of India. Functioning under the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, TRIFED plays a significant role in socio-economic development of tribal populations by supporting tribal artisans, forest produce gatherers and self-help groups through sustainable market linkages and capacity-building initiatives.
The General Manager heads the regional operations of TRIFED in the North East Region and is responsible for overseeing implementation of various tribal development programmes across states including Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Tripura and Sikkim. The officer works closely with state governments, tribal cooperatives, self-help groups, non-governmental organisations and grassroots institutions for effective execution of welfare and livelihood initiatives.
One of the primary responsibilities of the General Manager is to promote marketing and value addition of tribal products, including handicrafts, handlooms and Minor Forest Produce (MFP). The officer ensures that tribal artisans and forest dwellers receive fair prices and improved market access through exhibitions, retail outlets, digital platforms and national-level promotional programmes.
The General Manager also supervises procurement and implementation of schemes related to Minimum Support Price (MSP) for Minor Forest Produce, aimed at protecting tribal gatherers from exploitation and market fluctuations. The role involves coordinating procurement operations, monitoring pricing mechanisms and ensuring timely payments and support to tribal communities engaged in forest-based livelihoods.
Another key responsibility includes organising training programmes, entrepreneurship development initiatives and skill enhancement activities for tribal artisans and producer groups. The officer promotes capacity building and helps tribal communities improve product quality, packaging, branding and market competitiveness.
The position requires extensive coordination with central and state government agencies, financial institutions, cooperatives and development organisations to strengthen tribal livelihood programmes and improve socio-economic outcomes in the region. The General Manager also plays an important role in expanding TRIFED’s retail and e-commerce presence to enhance visibility and sales of tribal products from the North East.
Administrative and financial management form a significant part of the assignment. The officer supervises regional offices, project implementation, staff administration, budget utilisation and compliance with government guidelines and operational procedures. Monitoring project performance and ensuring transparency and efficiency in programme execution are also critical aspects of the role.
Given the unique cultural diversity and developmental needs of the North Eastern region, the position of General Manager, TRIFED Guwahati assumes considerable importance in promoting inclusive growth and preserving tribal heritage and traditional craftsmanship. The officer contributes towards empowering tribal communities through sustainable livelihood opportunities and market-driven economic development.
